legends-bannerWe all knew it was coming, and at least now Star Wars readers will have time to prepare ourselves for the change. As Scott Shannon, Del Rey’s Senior Vice President and Publisher, commented “And now we’re excited to finally be able to call our upcoming novels true canon—a single, cohesive Star Wars storyline—all while keeping the amazing backlist of Star Wars Legends content in print.” So while we’ve got a new canon starting in September, the old canon is being rebranded Star Wars Legends. The rebranding includes new “Legends” banners on the Star Wars book covers no longer a part of the official canon. That means any books released prior to John Jackson Miller’s upcoming novel A New Dawn.

Now I’m not a hardcore book collector, but I do have a large Star Wars book collection. Initially I tried to get them all as cheaply as possible which meant lots of paperbacks. In years since, I’ve tried to replace them with hardcovers whenever possible. That means I have a few copies of the same book just in different formats. I’ve also picked up extra copies when the price is too good to pass by. As such, I’ve come across different sized hardcover novels. And of course there are Star Wars books out there with different covers, especially the foreign editions which sometimes have completely different artwork. With the new Star Wars Legends line, this means we’ll be getting ALL of those old Star Wars novels with new covers. The question is: how hardcore of a collector are you? Will you try to get them all? Or, like me, will you instead pick a few discreet titles to add to your collection. One way or another, here’s a look at some of the “Legends” covers that have already been revealed.

You know, there are a few old worn out copies that could use replacements…

  1. Why is it that 2/3 of Empire and Rebellion is now “Legends,” while 1/3 remains canon? And they’re really going to make books like Kenobi (which can’t possibly interfere with Disney’s plans) “legends” now, too?
