10. Because you like fantasy stories such as Forgotten Realms novels, or Warhammer books like Gotrek and Felix.

9. You enjoyed Paul’s Star Wars novels, but are ready to branch out into other genres of fiction. Continue Reading Ten Reasons to Read ‘The Hammer and the Blade’…

Egil and Nix: The Fan’s Choice

We held a contest earlier in the week asking fans who they liked or thought they would like better: Egil or Nix. Both characters will be showing up next week in Paul S. Kemp’s latest novel The Hammer and the Blade. So who was the fan favorite?

Egil sounds more my style: speak softly and carry a big stick (or hammers). Thanks for the giveaway.” -Tim

“So far, I’ve definitely liked both of the characters in the excerpts and am REALLY looking forward to The Hammer and the Blade. But I’ve gotta go with Egil. We don’t really know much about him, and I’m intrigued as to the mysteries of him and his past. Plus, he carries two huge hammers. How can you beat that?” -Ben

Let’s just say hammers aren’t the only weapons of choice for Egil. He does really well with a crowbar, too. :) Continue Reading Egil and Nix: The Fan’s Choice…

‘The Hammer and the Blade’ is calling you

Yes, we’re promoting The Hammer and the Blade here at Roqoo Depot. Is it because we’re paid to do so? No. Is it because Paul S. Kemp threatened us by hiring an assassin named Drasek Riven? Not so much. Was it the venomous holo message we got from a Sith Lord named Malgus? Not really. The reason we’re pushing The Hammer and the Blade is because we liked it. It’s a fun, entertaining novel that has both wit and adventure.

If you’re still undecided, why not take a look at some of the excerpts posted by Paul? Better yet, Angry Robot Books has the first fifty pages online. Give Egil and Nix a try and see if the story telling and the characters suit you. We’re betting they will.

And hey, there’s another chance to win a free copy over on Poisoned Rationality.

Yes, you can win a night with Paul S. Kemp! Courtesy of Roqoo Depot and Angry Robot Books, we are going to giveaway a free night with Paul. You can take him to bed with you, share him on the couch, or curl up with him outside. And if your the patient kind, you can even stretch it out for a couple days!

If you’re still with us, here’s the catch: we’re giving away a free night with Paul S. Kemp’s newest novel The Hammer and the Blade. Sorry to disappoint all those readers who were hoping for a romantic evening with Paul, but trust us, having the book will be so much better than a date with a lawyer. And yes, if you’re patient, you can still stretch out the experience a couple nights. Best yet, the book doesn’t ever get tired if you want to start over again!

The Hammer and the Blade is an awesome sword and sorcery book that follows a colorful duo named Egil and Nix. They’re part tomb robbers, part adventurers, and part comedians. It’s a great book that fans of Star Wars and the Forgotten Realms can all enjoy, and it takes place in an all new world created entirely by Kemp and populated with characters of his imagining.

To win a free copy of The Hammer and the Blade, all you have to do is leave a comment and let us know who you like (or think you’ll like) better: Egil or Nix. Egil is the quiet, thinking type. He’s got some ghosts in his past, but this priest of the momentary god has two big hammers that can smash any mortal problem into smithereens. Nix, on the other hand, is a fast talking flirt whose mouth can get him into trouble. But he’s got enough skill with magic to make him dangerous…sometimes to himself as well as others. His weapon of choice is his falchion or better yet, a geehaw from his bag of tricks.

We’ll pick a random winner tomorrow, so if you like free books, enter now and don’t be ashamed to love this book all – night – long.

Note: Thanks to Angry Robot Books, we’re opening up the competition to everyone, so free shipping anywhere!.

Big Shiny Robot Interviews Paul S. Kemp

Big Shiny Robot posted an interview today with author Paul S. Kemp. As all of the other recent Kemp interviews, this one covers his upcoming sword and sorcery novel The Hammer and the Blade.

And the world you created here was so fully realized, will we be seeing more stories not involving Egil and Nix at any point?

PK: Interesting question and one I honestly haven’t considered. For the time being, I’m content to show the world through Egil and Nix’s eyes, but I guess you never know. Tangent: I’m delighted to hear you found the world evocative. That’s a tricky thing in sword and sorcery fiction. On the one hand, it shouldn’t be an encyclopedic reference book for a secondary world (we can leave that to epic fantasy). On the other hand, there still needs to be a strong sense of place. I’m glad to hear it worked for you.

Civilian Reader Interview with Paul S. Kemp

Civilian Reader has posted an interview with author Paul S. Kemp covering his upcoming novel The Hammer and the Blade…

The Hammer and the Blade is my attempt to tell a story like that, a tale that is unabashedly, unapologetically, a great adventure story – pacey, with cracking dialog and compelling characters, with both dark moments and laugh out loud moments sprinkled liberally throughout. I hope I managed to do it, and I hope it evokes in someone the same glorious sense of fun that Leiber, Howard, and Moorcock’s work did for me.” -Paul S. Kemp

I can’t recall if this had been revealed yet or not, but Paul also mentioned that his upcoming Star Wars duology will be in hardcover.
