Author Paul S. Kemp posted a new blurb for his upcoming Forgotten Realms novel The Godborn. The Godborn will be book two in The Sundering series which includes authors like Troy Denning and R.A. Salvatore. If you’re thinking of broadening your reading, this would be a great series to check out.

The shadow legacy of Erevis Cale lives on even as his old foe Mephistopheles seeks to stamp it out at any cost. Cale’s son Vasen—unmoored in time by the god Mask—has thus far been shielded from the archdevil’s dark schemes, alone among the servants of the Lord of Light who have raised him since birth.

Living in a remote abbey nestled among the Thunder Peaks of Sembia, Vasen is haunted by dreams of his father, trapped in the frozen hell of Cania. He knows the day will come when he must assume his role in the divine drama unfolding across Faerûn. But Vasen knows not what that role should be . . . or whether he is ready to take it on. He only knows what his father tells him in dreams—that he must not fail.

Enter Drasek Riven, a former compatriot of Erevis Cale, now near divine and haunted by dreams of his own—he too knows the time to act is near. Shar, the great goddess of darkness, looks to cast her shadow on the world forever. Riven has glimpsed the cycle of night she hopes to complete, and he knows she must be stopped.

At the crossroads of divine intrigue and mortal destiny, unlikely heroes unite to thwart the powers of shadow and hell, and the sundering of worlds is set on its course.

Examiner Interview with Paul S. Kemp

Examiner.com posted an interview with author Paul S. Kemp discussing writing and his upcoming books. While Paul didn’t divulge any new details on his upcoming hardcover Star Wars duology, he did provide some ideas on what to expect in The Godborn.

“The Godborn” will take all of the story threads from The Erevis Cale Trilogy and The Twilight War and bring them to an explosive conclusion. One needn’t have read those previous trilogies to appreciate “The Godborn,” but those who have will possibly have a bit deeper of an experience with the story.

“The Godborn” will feature the breakneck action and (I hope) the nuanced characterization I’m know for, but thematically it’s very much the story (from lots of different angles) of the price that faith requires of believers, and, in the end, whether or not those believers are willing to pay that price.

“The Godborn” has a fairly sizeable cast, and some of the main characters (Princes Rivalen and Brennus of Shade, Drasek Riven) have featured prominently in my earlier Cale stories, while some of the main characters (Vasen Cale, son of Erevis Cale) are new.

The Sundering: Kemp, Denning, Salvatore and More!

One of the big announcements at Gen Con 2012 was the announcement of a new six book series that will change the world of the Forgotten Realms. The new series is being called The Sundering and will feature a different author for each book. The authors (in order) will include R. A. Salvatore (The Companions), Paul S. Kemp (The Godborn), Erin M. Evans (The Adversary), Richard Lee Byers (The Reaver), Troy Denning (The Sentinel), and Ed Greenwood (The Herald). Popular characters such as like Drizzt Do’Urden, Elminster, Drasek Riven, and Erevis cale will be appearing in the novels, as well as some new characters like Erevis Cale’s son, Vasen Cale.

For Denning fans this is big news since Troy hasn’t written a Forgotten Realms novel since The Sorcerer back in 2002. I’m really interested to see who the “old favorites” will be in The Sentinel.

As a huge Kemp fan, I’m glad that they revealed some new artwork of the characters which includes Erevis Cale, Drasek Riven, and Vasen Cale (Vasen Cale is crouching with the sword and shield, Erevis Cale is behind him bleeding shadowstuff, and Drasek Riven is second from the far right right). I’ve been looking forward to The Godborn and I can’t wait to see what Paul cooks up.

The Keynote Address also featured a cover gallery showcasing each book. You can watch the 2012 Gen Con Keynote Address below (book news starts around 34:00).

Paul S. Kemp Interview, Excerpt, and More

This week Omnivoracious.com‘s Susan J. Morris posted a very nice interview with author Paul S. Kemp. The interview focused on anti-heroes and Kemp’s use of them in his novels. Questions and comments ranged from his Forgotten Realms work with Erevis Cale to his more recent Star Wars novel Deceived and Darth Malgus. Lots of great aspects covered including writing villains and lots of info on writing the anti-hero. You can read the article here.

In other news, Paul recently posted an excerpt from his upcoming Forgotten Realms book Godborn, the latest edition to his Erevis Cale novels. Godborn won’t be out until November next year so if you haven’t read any of the Erevis Cale novels there is still plenty of time to catch up. You can read the excerpt here.

Wrapping things up, Paul also chimed in with another great dose of humor on his website. No drunk Tweeting, but he does wax poetic about Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos, publishing, the Kindle Fire, and some humorous references to Lord of the Rings. Read it here and don’t miss out on the fun.

And don’t forget, Kemp’s Star Wars book Riptide comes out October 25 in both paperback and digital formats.
