Kemp on the Realms and Star Wars

SF Signal posted a nice interview with author Paul S. Kemp covering Forgotten Realms, Star Wars, and Egil and Nix. Paul had some interesting comments about how his novels have affected each other.

“In terms of Cale and Jaden: *Learned* is probably too strong a word, but my experience writing each has influenced later novels of the other. I wrote the Cale stories before writing Jaden’s duology, so I brought some of the dark and gritty tone of the Cale stories into Jaden’s story in Crosscurrent and Riptide. On the flip side, writing the relationships with Jaden and Khedryn and Marr (the two spacers who accompany him) reminded me that leavening in some humor gives the reader a needed break from a book with an otherwise darker tone. That influenced me as I wrote The Godborn, the next novel in the Cale Chronicles.” -Paul S. Kemp

Author Paul S. Kemp did a Q&A on Reddit that covers not only his Star Wars books, but also his non-Star Wars books. Paul talks about the freedom he has with his writing, how he got into Star Wars, some of his favorite authors and books, and even delves into his preferred brand of scotch. One very interesting thing he mentioned was this…

I’d love to write the novel in which Grandmaster Luke Skywalker goes out in a way that suits such a great character.

Catching up on some Star Wars interviews we missed, there’s a few with comic writer John Ostrander covering his new series Agent of the Empire. John reveals the action will kick off in the Corporate Sector and provides some general info on the feel of the series in an interview with Nerd World News. In another interview with Angry Koala Gear, John covers some broader ground with his influences, his favorite comics, his favorite Star Wars character, and he touches on Agent of the Empire and Dawn of the Jedi. Although the interview warns of spoilers, there weren’t any to be wary of. There is one last interview John did with TORSyndicate in the form of a podcast which you can listen to here. The podcast interview covers a lot of territory, but doesn’t delve into Agent of the Empire too much. Continue Reading Star Wars Interviews Round-Up…

Suvudu Interviews Riptide author Paul S. Kemp

Suvudu has posted an interview with Star Wars: Riptide author Paul S. Kemp. The questions range from the characters to aspects of time travel in Crosscurrent, and they even ask a few questions eerily similar to our own interview.

Khedryn reminds me a lot of Han Solo, and I somehow doubt this was an accident. What were your sources of inspiration, whether real-world or GFFA, for the characters of Khedryn and Marr?

The Han comparison is fair, though I think any rakish character on the edge of the law who appears in the EU is inevitably going to remind folks of Han.  I think we’re all a bit too ready to see that comparison, though, and its prevalence probably speaks more to the power of Han-as-archetype than anything else.

It’s honestly hard for me to go back and figure out from where I particular character sprang.  Khedryn has some Captain Mal from Firefly in him certainly, and the dynamic between Khedryn and Marr has a bit of a parallel in various buddy films/books.

I regard Khedryn a scrappy, impulsive, hardscrabble underdog, and Marr as the reserved, gifted brains of the outfit, the Yin to Khedryn’s Yang.

Suvudu’s regular Take Five column features Star Wars author Paul S. Kemp today as they ask him to share five things about his latest books.

4. Looking back, I can see that what I write is influenced in small but noticeable ways by the art/media I’m consuming at that time. So when I look back at Riptide and its prequel, Crosscurrent, I can see little nods to Firefly and Battlestar Galactica, both of which I was watching at the time.
