Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

Awards Chatter: Viggo Mortensen interview is a good one. Viggo talks about his parents, his childhood, being born in Manhattan but raised in Argentina, returning to America, the influence of his mother’s love in movies, how he eventually got into acting, his early roles and missed opportunities like Platoon, and of course filming Lord of the Rings. They also cover his latest film Captain Fantastic. Great interview and one you don’t want to miss.

Awards Chatter: Ryan Reynolds interview is pretty neat as it details the long journey that eventually led to the Deadpool movie. He talks about going from Canada and kid’s soap operas to Hollywood and films. I had no idea how deeply invested Ryan was in the idea of a Deadpool movie, nor did I realize that he wrote the script and had shopped it around for years in trying to get the film made. If you’re a Deadpool fan, you’ll definitely want to check this one out. And even if you’re not, Ryan talks about the various films he’s worked on, going from smaller films to big films, and what happened with Green Lantern.

Beltway Banthas: Episode 21 dives into politics with cabinet news, Mark Hamill reading Trump quotes in Joker voice, and they’re joined by guest Dennis Keithly from Starships Sabers and Scoundrels as they discuss the Separatists. The audio is a little tinny in this episode but the discussion on the Separatists is pretty good. Continue Reading Podcasts in Review…

New Release: ‘A Conversation in Blood’ by Paul S. Kemp

A Conversation in Blood by Paul S. Kemp is out today in hardcover, digital and audiobook formats. This is the third book in the Tales of Egil and Nix series, but it’s also a good jumping in point for new readers. Click here to read our full review.

Nix is a nimble thief with just enough knowledge of magic to get into serious trouble. Egil is the only priest of a discredited god. Together, they seek riches and renown, but somehow it is always misadventure and mayhem that find them—even in the dive bar they call home. And their luck has yet to change.

All Nix wants to do is cheer Egil up after a bout of heartbreak. And, of course, strike it so rich that they need never worry about their combined bar bill. But when the light-fingered scoundrel plunders a tomb and snatches mysterious golden plates covered in runes, the treasure brings terrifying trouble. Pursued by an abomination full of ravenous hunger and unquenchable wrath, Egil and Nix find all they hold dear—including their beloved tavern—in dire peril. To say nothing of the world itself.

Thinking Outside the Box: Kemp and Lords of the Sith

While Lords of the Sith is an action filled Vader and Palpatine adventure, it does some things that make it stand apart from other Star Wars novels. It has nothing to do with grandiose, ambitious plots or wicked twist endings, but in taking a different spin on characters. In Lords of the Sith, Kemp takes three original characters—Isval, Belkor and Moff Mors—and adds an element to each that makes them rather unique. While Vader and Palpatine may be the stars of the book, and they certainly take up all the cover space, they’re actually not the characters that left me pondering at the end of the story. The real enigmas are the supporting cast.

Now before I go any further, let me warn you that I’m going into full blown spoiler territory. Don’t read this if you haven’t read the book and don’t want it spoiled. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at Belkor. Continue Reading Ewok Corner: Thinking Outside the Box…

New Release and Review: ‘Lords of the Sith’ by Paul S. Kemp

Lords of the Sith by Paul S. Kemp is out today in hardcover, digital and audiobook formats. Click here to read our full review.

When the Emperor and his notorious apprentice, Darth Vader, find themselves stranded in the middle of insurgent action on an inhospitable planet, they must rely on each other, the Force, and their own ruthlessness to prevail.

“It appears things are as you suspected, Lord Vader. We are indeed hunted.”

Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Knight, is just a memory. Darth Vader, newly anointed Sith Lord, is ascendant. The Emperor’s chosen apprentice has swiftly proven his loyalty to the dark side. Still, the history of the Sith Order is one of duplicity, betrayal, and acolytes violently usurping their Masters—and the truest measure of Vader’s allegiance has yet to be taken. Until now.

On Ryloth, a planet crucial to the growing Empire as a source of slave labor and the narcotic known as “spice,” an aggressive resistance movement has arisen, led by Cham Syndulla, an idealistic freedom fighter, and Isval, a vengeful former slave. But Emperor Palpatine means to control the embattled world and its precious resources—by political power or firepower—and he will be neither intimidated nor denied. Accompanied by his merciless disciple, Darth Vader, he sets out on a rare personal mission to ensure his will is done.

For Syndulla and Isval, it’s the opportunity to strike at the very heart of the ruthless dictatorship sweeping the galaxy. And for the Emperor and Darth Vader, Ryloth becomes more than just a matter of putting down an insurrection: When an ambush sends them crashing to the planet’s surface, where inhospitable terrain and an army of resistance fighters await them, they will find their relationship tested as never before. With only their lightsabers, the dark side of the Force, and each other to depend on, the two Sith must decide if the brutal bond they share will make them victorious allies or lethal adversaries.
