Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

Blast Points: Episode 20 begins with a little news and speculation as they talk about the Episode VIII aerial set photos, Luke’s Force tree, the new Force For Change video, John Williams’ comments on doing the soundtrack for Episode VIII, Rogue One Vader pics, Mads on Rogue One, the new Han Solo and “Jabba Flow.” For the main topic, they go over their ten favorite Star Wars trailers which leads to an entertaining discussion covering the Revenge of the Jedi trailer, the tone poems, the Yoda Man ad, teasers and more. Gabe and Jason have just been nailing it with their episodes as I’ve enjoyed every single one of them. Their chock full of humor and Star Wars goodness that has quickly made them one of my favorite Star Wars podcasts to listen to. They are this close to being my absolute favorite at the moment.

BNN (Bombad Radio): Episode 5.9.16 covers 10 newsworthy stories for the week in a quick little burst that’s great for staying in the know without getting bogged down in a hour plus podcast. This week they talk about Chrome being the new #1 browser in the world, Seth MacFarlane’s new sci-fi show, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror ride closing, new Star Wars video game, Battlefield doing a WWI game, the young Han Solo casting, cartridge gaming making a comeback and more.

Bombad Radio: Episode 239 features an interview with voice actor J. Michael Tatum who talks about working for FUNimation, getting into the business, wearing multiple hats to make a living, dubbing vs. subtitles, joining the Dragon Ball club, and lots of advice on getting into voice acting. Afterwards Jeremiah and James cover some Star Wars news. Excellent episode. Continue Reading Podcasts in Review…

Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

Aggressive Negotiations: Issue 008 begins a multi-episode on the fall of Anakin Skywalker. In this episode they talk about his conception in the Force and whether that was caused by Palpatine, whether Anakin should have been taken or left on Tatooine, choosing Jedi masters for him, his relationship with Padme and the Jedi’s knowledge of it, whether giving him an apprentice was a good idea, and whether his fall is even sadder after Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It’s a good discussion of all things Anakin.

Bantha Fodder: Episode 6 starts out with some miscellaneous topics, from drones to kidney stones, but things get pretty good when the main discussion kicks in. They talk about whether Rey caused Han to die in The Force Awakens. Did she push Kylo Ren into having to prove himself or did Snoke motivate him to take the leap? They throw down their arguments as each host tries to convince the other. Good one to check out. While there is a good argument for Rey leading to Han’s death, I think she’s more of a catalyst than a cause.

Beyond the Vote: Episode 002 is a solo episode with just Riley following the Carolina debate. I have to admit the podcast just doesn’t have the same dynamic without Scott. Together, they make a great team, but the solo episode wasn’t as good. Continue Reading Podcasts in Review…

Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

501stCast: Episode 91 kicks off with Legion news, the induction of the new Chewbacca actor from The Force Awakens, troop reports, details on the special White House screening of The Force Awakens, and then the “Know A Legion” segment with Terry Chuii. Note if you already listened to the Know A Legion minicast, then you’ve already heard this segment so you’ll want to skip to the 49 minute mark where they get back to new stuff. Just a quick observation here – if you’re not that interested in Legion news, ie. hearing all the troop reports from the garrisons, then listening to the minicasts is the way to go as they’re way more appealing to general fans. However, if you’re wanting to stay up to date with what the 501st Legion is doing, then the main podcast episodes are the way to go.

Aggressive Negotiations: Episode 002 covers friendships and sexualizing friendships. They talk about the relationship between Poe and Finn, Rey and Finn, Han and Luke, and even Poe and BB-8. It’s an interesting episode.

Blast Points: *New Podcast* Episode 1 – This is a new podcast I’ve started listening to. Currently they’re up to seven episodes and their latest one includes Star Wars artist Joe Corroney, which I’m looking forward to listening to. However, I was really impressed with their first episode. It’s a discussion format show with two hosts, Jason and Gabe. In Episode 1 they tackle the “Where’s Rey” discussion, the desire for Kanjiklub toys, Rogue One rumors, and then their main discussion which focuses on defending The Force Awakens from common complaints. From it being a remake of A New Hope, to Rey’s sudden use of Force powers and the lack of politics, they cover quite a few of the big issues some people have been pointing out. There’s a couple things that really made this discussion stand out. First off, they break down the hero’s journey and how different elements in TFA each represent part of the journey. While I’ve heard other people point out a few things, I have yet to hear anyone take it to this level as they point out a lot of elements and cover far more of the hero’s journey than most people talk about. It’s pretty cool. They even bring up a nice parallel between Han dying and touching Kylo’s face to the scene in Attack of the Clones where Shmi dies and touches Anakin’s face. It’s a very entertaining podcast with some excellent discussion. The audio quality is decent, not great, but decent, and it’s a pro-Prequels podcast so no prequel hating here. Worth checking out. Here is this week’s Around the Web news roundup of Star Wars and beyond.

Book News

  • Jennifer Heddle announced on Wednesday that Alan Dean Foster‘s novelization of The Force Awakens hit #1 on The New York Times Best Sellers List.

  • However, as of yet, I don’t see it posted on their site so it might be for next week. That said, Star Wars: The Force Awakens by Greg Rucka and Phil Noto is on The New York Times Best Sellers List at #3 for Children’s Middle Grade Hardcover (was #2 last week) and #1 for Children’s Middle Grade E-Book. Also worth noting that Greg Rucka‘s Before the Awakening was #1 for Children’s Middle Grade E-Book at the beginning of the year.

Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

Card Trader Illuminerdi: While there’s a handful of Star Wars podcasts I listen to on a regular basis, I try to branch out and listen to new ones every now and then. And yes, I do follow through on suggested ones (so feel free to hit me up with your suggestions). I got a poke on Facebook suggesting I listen to Card Trader Illuminerdy, so I did. First off, these guys live up to their name. They go in deep on the Star Wars Topps Trading App covering new cards, upcoming releases, and even the odds on different cards. Unfortunately if you’re unfamiliar to the trading app (like me) the discussion quickly gets overwhelming. I couldn’t really follow along with a lot of the stuff they were talking about. But, if you’re a big fan of the app, this may be the podcast you’re looking for. It’s certainly the only podcast I’ve heard of focusing on the game, they’ve got a good mix of hosts, good audio quality, and there’s some nice additions of humor and information. In particular, I checked out the July.17.2015 Episode.

Coffee With Kenobi: Coffee Chat with Pablo Hidalgo features a conversation with Pablo covering storytelling, Star Wars, and insight on the story group. I especially enjoyed hearing his comments on how they’re handling Vader as a character. The only downside to the episode is that Pablo’s audio is a little crummy, everyone else is fine. Still worth a listen.

Comic Book Noob: Ant-Man episode is a nice little episode that provides some background on the main characters in the Ant-Man comics, their many iterations, and how it ties into the film. It doesn’t spoil anything and for anyone unfamiliar with Ant-Man (like me) it gives some much needed insight on the character and the series without diving too deep into the subject matter and getting bogged down. It stays light, informational, entertaining, and gives just the right about of info for fans new to the character. I have to say the Comic Book Noob episodes are a great thing to check out. I’m really enjoying them so far.
