Thinking Outside the Box: Kemp and Lords of the Sith

While Lords of the Sith is an action filled Vader and Palpatine adventure, it does some things that make it stand apart from other Star Wars novels. It has nothing to do with grandiose, ambitious plots or wicked twist endings, but in taking a different spin on characters. In Lords of the Sith, Kemp takes three original characters—Isval, Belkor and Moff Mors—and adds an element to each that makes them rather unique. While Vader and Palpatine may be the stars of the book, and they certainly take up all the cover space, they’re actually not the characters that left me pondering at the end of the story. The real enigmas are the supporting cast.

Now before I go any further, let me warn you that I’m going into full blown spoiler territory. Don’t read this if you haven’t read the book and don’t want it spoiled. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at Belkor. Continue Reading Ewok Corner: Thinking Outside the Box…

New Release and Review: ‘Lords of the Sith’ by Paul S. Kemp

Lords of the Sith by Paul S. Kemp is out today in hardcover, digital and audiobook formats. Click here to read our full review.

When the Emperor and his notorious apprentice, Darth Vader, find themselves stranded in the middle of insurgent action on an inhospitable planet, they must rely on each other, the Force, and their own ruthlessness to prevail.

“It appears things are as you suspected, Lord Vader. We are indeed hunted.”

Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Knight, is just a memory. Darth Vader, newly anointed Sith Lord, is ascendant. The Emperor’s chosen apprentice has swiftly proven his loyalty to the dark side. Still, the history of the Sith Order is one of duplicity, betrayal, and acolytes violently usurping their Masters—and the truest measure of Vader’s allegiance has yet to be taken. Until now.

On Ryloth, a planet crucial to the growing Empire as a source of slave labor and the narcotic known as “spice,” an aggressive resistance movement has arisen, led by Cham Syndulla, an idealistic freedom fighter, and Isval, a vengeful former slave. But Emperor Palpatine means to control the embattled world and its precious resources—by political power or firepower—and he will be neither intimidated nor denied. Accompanied by his merciless disciple, Darth Vader, he sets out on a rare personal mission to ensure his will is done.

For Syndulla and Isval, it’s the opportunity to strike at the very heart of the ruthless dictatorship sweeping the galaxy. And for the Emperor and Darth Vader, Ryloth becomes more than just a matter of putting down an insurrection: When an ambush sends them crashing to the planet’s surface, where inhospitable terrain and an army of resistance fighters await them, they will find their relationship tested as never before. With only their lightsabers, the dark side of the Force, and each other to depend on, the two Sith must decide if the brutal bond they share will make them victorious allies or lethal adversaries.

lords-of-the-sithWith Paul S. Kemp’s next Star Wars book fast approaching, here is an excerpt from Lords of the Sith.

Cham had fought for his people and Ryloth for almost a standard decade. He’d fought for a free Ryloth when the Republic had tried to annex it, and he fought now for a free Ryloth against the Empire that was trying to strip it bare.

A free Ryloth.

The phrase, the concept, was the polestar around which his existence would forever turn.

Because Ryloth was not free.

Lords of the Sith will be out in hardcover, digital and audiobook formats on April 28th. Check out Random House’s official product page for excerpts and retailer links.

Random House has posted a new blurb for Paul S. Kemp’s Lords of the Sith.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. . . .

Still, the history of the Sith Order is one of duplicity, betrayal, and acolytes violently usurping their Masters—and the truest measure of Vader’s allegiance has yet to be taken. Until now.

On Ryloth, a planet crucial to the growing Empire as a source of slave labor and the narcotic known as “spice,” an aggressive resistance movement has arisen, led by Cham Syndulla, an idealistic freedom fighter, and Isval, a vengeful former slave. star-wars-lords-of-the-sith-paul-s-kempAuthor Paul S. Kemp also shared a little on his blog today about his newly revealed Star Wars novel Lords of the Sith.

My next Star Wars novel was announced today (press release here).  This is the cover.  Just.  Look.  At.  It.

Now, I actually wanted to title the novel, “Force Lightning, Mofos!” but that idea was not well received.  :-)

A blurb from Del Rey:

When the Emperor and his notorious apprentice, Darth Vader, find themselves stranded in the middle of insurgent action on an inhospitable planet, they must rely solely on each other, the Force, and their awesome martial skills to prevail. Created in collaboration with the Lucasfilm Story Group. Coming March 2015. Jacket art by Aaron McBride.

I can say a few things more about the book:  First, as is apparent from thatspectacular cover, the book features Vader and Palpatine.  It also features a character who I’m not allowed to name just yet, but who appeared in The Clone Wars animated series.  In terms of where it fits in the timeline, Lords of the Sith is set after the Revenge of the Sith film and before the forthcoming Rebels television show.

Alas, that’s all I’m allowed to say at this point about the substance of the book.

I’m excited about it, though, and hope you are, too.

Oh, and finally:  BOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM!
