In the headlines this week, there’s a new petition out there against Disney, but hey, this time it’s not by Star Wars fans. It would seem there are some questionable Avengers shirts being merchandised towards boys and girls. The boy’s shirts proclaim “Be a hero” while the girl’s shirts say “I need a hero.” You can catch the full story here on The Daily Dot.

Comic writer Tom Taylor has made Amazon’s Top 100 Authors List with the smashing success of his Injustice: Gods Among Us comic for DC Comics. Is it really that good? Why yes it is. Congratulations to Tom for earning a bit of well deserved success. Continue Reading Around the Web…

The Hollywood Reporter posted a nice article on Kathleen Kennedy that sheds some light on how J.J. Abrams was brought on board for Star Wars Episode VII, as well as some comments on the projected 2015 release date.

“Our goal is to move as quickly as we can, and we’ll see what happens. The timetable we care about is getting the story.”

Click here to read the full interview. Aside from Abrams and Episode VII, it highlights Kennedy’s work on other films such as Lincoln, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and her long history with Spielberg. It’s worth reading.

StarWars.com has officially announced that J.J. Abrams will be directing Star Wars Episode VII.

“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie. J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.” -Kathleen Kennedy

“I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.” -George Lucas

“To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor. I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.” -J.J. Abrams

Of course we also know Michael Arndt will be writing the screenplay, Kathleen Kennedy will be executive producer, and George Lucas will be a creative consultant. StarWars.com also mentioned that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg will be “consulting on the project.” Kasdan was a screenwriter for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. (Note it was previously rumored that Kasdan and Kinberg would be writers for Episodes VIII and IX)

No word yet on whether J.J. Abrams will only be doing Episode VII or whether he’ll be doing all three.

I love You.  I know.  It’s only been a couple of weeks (Dec. 21) since the Disney Deal became official, but George Lucas is wasting no time moving on with his life.  He announced, via a Lucasfilm rep to the Hollywood Reporter, that he and long time girlfriend, Melody Hobson, are engaged.  Ms. Hobson heads Ariel Investment Llc., is the chairman of Ariel Mutual Funds, as well as chairman of Dreamworks Animation.  Lucas and Hobson have been a duo since 2006.

One of the good guys.  In a story right out of Fanboys, only this time it’s unfortunately true, J.J. Abrams granted a dying fan’s wish and arranged a private screening of Star Trek: Into Darkness.  The fan, known only as Dan, has only weeks left when a friend posted his plight on Reddit.  The post eventually attracted the notice of Abrams who reached out to Dan and his wife.  Dan, who is suffering from two forms of cancer, reportedly loved the film.  Honestly, after hearing this, I won’t care if the film is terrible (which I doubt).  I’m going to love it. J.J. Abrams has finally released an official synopsis for his new Star Trek movie.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

So not a lot to go on, but at least it’s something.  Star Trek Into Darkness is due in theaters May 17, 2013

According to the Hollywood Reporter, NBC has announced that Jason Isaacs’ new TV series, Awake, is scheduled to debut March 1.

Awake is a sci-fi crime drama and Isaacs plays a police detective, Michael Britten, who awakens after a car accident involving his wife and son.  Britten moves between two realities where in one his wife dies and the other his son dies.  Britten starts living a double life, attempting to keep both wife and son alive, while noticing strange links between the realities.

Over on Entertainment Weekly they’re reporting that J.J. Abrams has sold a sci-fi apocalypse pilot to NBC titled Revolution.

“A high octane action drama from J. J. Abrams following a group of characters struggling to survive and reunite with loved ones in a world where all forms of energy have mysteriously ceased to exist.”

This is the second descriptive blurb released for Revolution, but the first sounded distinctly familiar to TNT’s Falling Skies.  What with Awake debuting in March, Falling Skies returning in the summer, and Revolution set for the fall, at least it won’t be a total TV desert when it comes to scifi.

George Lucas is at it again and we can already hear the fanboy wailing.  EW also has an article on Lucas changing puppet Yoda to digital in The Phantom Menace 3D.  I don’t know how good  the film will be in 3D, but it’s going to be fun to watch the dilemma for the fanboys who will probably be torn between their disdain for TPM and their reactionary ranting regarding any changes to the Star Wars films.

Movie Debuts:

Big Miracle:  Drew Barrymore, Kristen Bell and John Krasinski

The Woman in Black: Daniel Radcliffe
