Guardians of the Whills is a fun little adventure story set shortly before the events of Rogue One. This is very much a lead-in novel and not a history of the two characters or the order they are apart of. But it is fun. Click here to read our full review.

Guardians of the Whills by Greg Rucka is out in hardcover today from Disney Lucasfilm Publishing.

An exciting adventure about two of the brave heroes from the smash hit movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story!

On the desert world of Jedha, in the Holy City, friends Baze and Chirrut used to be Guardians of the Whills, who looked after the Kyber Temple and the devoted pilgrims who worshipped there. Then the Empire came and took over the planet. The temple was destroyed and the people scattered. Now Baze and Chirrut do what they can to resist the Empire and protect the people of Jedha, but it never seems to be enough. Then a man named Saw Gerrera arrives, with a militia of his own and grand plans to take down the Empire. It seems like the perfect way for Baze and Chirrut to make a real difference and help the people of Jedha live better lives. But will it come at too great a cost?

Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

Awards Chatter: Samuel L. Jackson episode features a great interview with the actor covering his early life, the film career, how he met his wife, working with Spike Lee, auditioning for Reservoir Dogs, the N-word, guns, what he looks for in a role, what the ‘L’ stands for, Snakes on a Plane and The Hateful Eight. It offers a lot of insight on the actor and the host of the show does a really good job with the interview. Definitely worth a list.

Awards Chatter: J.J. Abrams episode has an interview with the director of The Force Awakens. They talk about Armageddon, Felicity, Star Trek, Star Wars and sequels. It’s an interesting interview, not as good as the Samuel L. Jackson one, but still interesting.

Bombad Radio: Episode 220 is their second roundtable of TFA discussion. Listening to this episode, I’ve come to realize that there are now two types of The Force Awakens discussions developing, which appears to be forming a gap in Star Wars fandom. On one side, there is the positive discussion of the film, and on the other, there’s the negative discussion of the film. Sadly, Bombad Radio is falling into the negative camp. As someone who thoroughly enjoyed the film, I found this episode very painful to listen to as some of the hosts enthusiastically commenced at tearing the movie apart and reveling in their criticisms of it. If you watched the movie and you had some gripes with it, and you’d like to listen to other people’s gripes, then this is the episode for you. As for me, I’m going to refrain from listening to any more TFA discussion on Bombad Radio as it just isn’t enjoyable for me. The negativity far outweighed any positive commentary. While there are legitimate criticisms, it’s not something I want to wallow in for an hour and a half. Continue Reading Podcasts in Review…

Here is this week’s Around the Web news roundup of Star Wars and beyond.

Book News

  • StarWars.com has a bunch of book info on upcoming titles you can check out here including new cover art and summaries. While the Art of and the Visual Guide are new news, Before the Awakening by Greg Rucka is. I really enjoyed his Han Solo novel Smuggler’s Run, so I’ll definitely be getting this one.

A companion piece to the Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens character novels, Star Wars: Before the Awakening is an anthology book that focuses on the lives of Rey, Finn, and Poe before the events of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

  • Nerdist has two animated videos, one of Jason Fry’s The Weapon of a Jedi and one of Greg Rucka’s Smuggler’s Run. They’re pretty cool looking, but might contain spoilers if you haven’t read the books yet.
  • Aside from Star Wars, pre-orders are up for the Warcraft movie prequel novel by Christie Golden.

Book Review: ‘Smuggler’s Run’ by Greg Rucka

Amidst the half dozen new Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens novels is Greg Rucka’s Smuggler’s Run. Compared to Aftermath, or Lost Stars for that matter, it’s a slim book at just 183 pages. It’s also being marketed at 8 to 12 year olds. But don’t let the age range or the page count fool you, this is a book worth checking out. Greg Rucka writes this story in a voice that’s on par with any adult Star Wars novel, and while it’s a quick read, it’s fun. Click here to read our full review.

  • Star Wars: Aftermath by Chuck Wendig will be hitting the New York Times Best Sellers list next week at number 4 for hardcover fiction, and number 7 for combined print and e-book fiction. That’s the highest I’ve seen a Star Wars book hit the best sellers list in a long time.
  • B&N’s Star Wars Trilogy hardcover is now out with the C-3PO version.
  • Yahoo.com has an interview with all the new authors of Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens including Jason Fry, Cecil Castellucci, Chuck Wendig, Greg Rucka and Claudia Gray.

journey-to-star-wars-the-force-awakens

The headline says it all: more than twenty new Star Wars books. EW and StarWars.com both have articles on this breaking lit news. For the lovers of the written word, this is very good news to hear.

At least 20 new books—from novels for adults and teens to storybooks and stickerbooks for younger kids—will be released this fall to fill the gap between 1983’s Return of the Jedi and this December’s The Force Awakens, EW has learned exclusively.

Those hoping to find out what Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo have been up to for the past three decades will find it first on the page, with Disney Worldwide Publishing and Lucasfilm Press confirming that the titles will be filled with Easter eggs foreshadowing events in J.J. Abrams’ Dec. 18 movie.

This new flood of literature is being called the Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. According to EW, “Many of the books are still being written and edited, so details (including who is writing them) are still under wraps.” But they were able to reveal a couple titles. Star Wars: Aftermath by Del Rey, Star Wars: Journey to the Force Awakens and Star Wars: Journey to the Force Awakens-C-3PO, both by Marvel, and Star Wars: Ships of the Galaxy by Studio Fun International. DK will be getting in the action with Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know.

As part of their Young Adult novels, Disney-Lucasfilm Press will be publishing Moving Target by Cecil Castellucci (Princess Leia adventure), The Weapon of a Jedi by Jason Fry (Luke Skywalker adventure), Lost Stars by Claudia Gray, and Smuggler’s Run by Greg Rucka (a Han Solo adventure).

So, for adult readers, the big news is Aftermath and question of what author will be attached to the project. That said, it’s great to hear so many books are coming out, and hopefully the YA novels will be worth checking out. With Star Wars Celebration Anaheim right around the corner, more news may not be so far away.
