Affleck in Argo

Well, slap my shebs and call me Sally, I did not see this one coming.  Ben Affleck will be playing Batman opposite Henry Cavil’s Superman in the Man of Steel sequel, set to open July 17, 2015.  Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane are also on board to reprise their MOS roles.  Affleck’s movie credits include Good Will Hunting, Dogma and Argo.  He’s received an Oscar for Good Will Hunting — he was the youngest person ever to receive the award for best screenplay —  and both a Golden Globe and Directors Guild Award for Argo.  Argo also won the Best Picture Oscar.  In one of those interesting coincidences, Ben Affleck played TV Superman George Reeves in the movie Hollywoodland opposite Diane Lane.

The-hunger-games-logoI guess I’ll get the bad news out of the way first.  If you’re looking for the District 8 refugees, Bonnie and Twill, or the peacekeeper Darius in the movie, don’t bother.  They’re not in it.  I get it because books-to-movies are like that.  You just can’t fit everything in.  I’m not so sanguine about the change to Peeta (he can swim because no amputation), and director Francis Lawrence’s statement is why:

“The movie is very, very true to the book,” but  “We made some changes to Peeta’s narrative,” says Lawrence. “We manned him up a little. And by the way it didn’t take a lot, just little choices to make here and there. The story doesn’t really change, his relationship with Katniss doesn’t change, he’s just a different kind of character.” For instance, in the book, the Hunger Games kicks off and Peeta is paralyzed when the other all-star tributes dive into the water. “

I don’t know about the rest of The Hunger Games fans, but I pretty much want to see the same character from the trilogy, not, you know a different character.

Here’s the good news.  Coldplay is releasing the song, Atlas, their first original movie track.  It will be available on iTunes August 26.

Europa ReportMagnolia Pictures’ Europa Report, with a pre-theatrical release on iTunes on June 27th, will hit movies houses on August 2nd.  The trailer definitely shows this movie has potential, and following is the official plot blurb.

Europa Report follows a contemporary mission to Jupiter’s moon Europa to investigate the possible existence of alien life within our solar system. When unmanned probes suggest that a hidden ocean could exist underneath Europa’s icy surface and may contain single-celled life, Europa Ventures, a privately funded space exploration company, sends six of the best astronauts from around the world to confirm the data and explore the revolutionary discoveries that may lie in the Europan ocean. After a near-catastrophic technical failure that leads to loss of communication with Earth and the tragic death of a crewmember, the surviving astronauts must overcome the psychological and physical toll of deep space travel, and survive a discovery on Europa more profound than they had ever imagined.
