Star Wars author Drew Karpyshyn posted an update yesterday on his site revealing a few cool tidbits. First off Drew will be at Star Wars Celebration VI, however he’s not sure what his exact is going to be yet. Secondly, all of Drew’s Star Wars novels will be getting audiobooks. This means an October 30 release for the Bane Trilogy (which will be read by Jonathan Davis), and a November 13 release for Annihilation (read by Marc Thompson). Thirdly, Drew is going to participate in the nationwide Star Wars Reads Day event on October 6th.

“On October 6th I and a few other local Star Wars authors will gather together at the Barnes & Noble Arboretum in Austin to meet fans and – possibly – read excerpts from our work.” -Drew Karpyshyn

Something very interesting to point out: “a few other local Star Wars authors” could very well mean Aaron Allston since Aaron lives in Texas. Regardless, if you’re in the area, you’ll definitely want to check it out.

Old Republic Radio interviewed Star Wars author Drew Karpyshyn. The interview touches on his favorite Star Wars film, the Old Republic era, Revan, and Children of Fire. Drew re-emphasized that he does not have any other Star Wars projects right now other than Annihilation. For the next few years he’ll be focusing on his original fantasy series Children of Fire.

Will you be writing anything more in the Star Wars universe after Star Wars Annihilation?

DK: There’s nothing on my schedule right now – for the next couple years I’ll be focusing on Children of Fire, my original fantasy trilogy. The first book in the series, also called Children of Fire, will come out in 2014. But I do enjoy Star Wars, so you never know what the future holds.

Random House has posted the the full blurb for Drew Karpyshyn’s next Star Wars novel, The Old Republic: Annihilation.

The Sith Empire is in flux. The Emperor is missing, presumed dead, and an ambitious Sith lord’s attempt to seize the throne has ended fatally. Still, Darth Karrid, commander of the fearsome Imperial battle cruiser Ascendant Spear, continues her relentless efforts to achieve total Sith domination of the galaxy.

But Karrid’s ruthless determination is more than matched in the steely resolve of Theron Shan, whose unfinished business with the Empire could change the course of the war for good. Though the son of a Jedi master, Theron does not wield the Force—but like his renowned mother, the spirit of rebellion is in his blood. As a top covert agent for the Republic, he struck a crucial blow against the Empire by exposing and destroying a Sith superweapon arsenal—which makes him the ideal operative for a daring and dangerous mission to end Ascendant Spear’s reign of terror.

Joined by hot-headed smuggler Teff’ith, with whom he has an inexplicable bond, and wise Jedi warrior Gnost-Dural, Darth Karrid’s former master, Theron must match wits and weapons with a battle-tested crew of the most cold-blooded dark side disciples. But time is brutally short. And if they don’t seize their one chance to succeed, they will surely have countless opportunities to die.

EUC Interview with Jennifer Heddle

EUCantina posted a really nice interview today with LucasBooks Senior Editor Jennifer Heddle. The interview covers her role with LucasBooks, the possibility of another X-Wing book, as well as some tantalizing teases about Matthew Stover returning and an update for the future of the EU at San Diego Comic Con. She also mentioned some more details on The Old Republic: Annihilation.

EUC: Can you give us any additional details about Paul S. Kemp’s untitled duology or Drew Karpyshyn’s The Old Republic: Annihilation?

JH: I can’t say too much about Paul Kemp’s books yet, aside from the fact that they’re in development, and it’s a concept we’re all really excited about. As for Annihilation, it’s a book that will have a lot of appeal for fans of the Old Republic game and/or comics, in that Theron Shan is the star and his mother Satele Shan plays a crucial role, but it’s also a strong action-adventure that will be entertaining even if you’ve never heard of the game. There’s also a great villain in the form of Darth Karrid, a former Jedi who commands the Sith’s ultimate warship through a cybernetic hookup. She doesn’t just command the ship, she is the ship. And Theron is determined to take her down.

Update on ‘Annihilation’

drewkarpyshynStar Wars author Drew Karpyshyn posted an update yesterday that included some new info on his upcoming novel The Old Republic: Annihilation.

It’s a stand alone story – it has no connection to Revan, and it doesn’t tie in directly with any of the storylines from the SWTOR video game, though it is set in that era. It actually takes place just after the events of the game, and the novel will reflect the Empire and the Republic as they stand at the end of the game’s storylines. (I won’t say anymore to avoid spoiling people who play the game but aren’t finished.)

The game features Theron Shan, a character who first appeared in the Lost Suns Dark Horse graphic novels, written by Alex Freed – my former co-worker at BioWare and the lead writer for SWTOR.

Annihilation is a little different than my other Star Wars books. The Bane trilogy focused on Darth Bane, one of the most powerful Sith Lords who ever lived. Revan obviously focused on Revan, another incredibly powerful Force user. Annihilation is different, because the main character is not a Jedi or Sith. Theron Shan, despite being a descendant of Revan and Bastila, isn’t Force sensitive. That makes for a very different type of novel, and a very different type of main character.

That doesn’t make Theron any less interesting, of course. My personal favorite character in the original trilogy is Han Solo, and I think he’s a good example of how you can be a hero and change the galaxy even if you can’t call on the Force at will.

That’s not to say Theron is an “ordinary” guy: he’s a highly trained field agent working for Republic Strategic Information Services. He has a number of cybernetic implants, along with a host of customized weapons and gadgets, and he’s supplemented his SIS training with his own ecclectic and esoteric studies. Sort of like Batman. Or Jason Bourne. Or James Bond. But in Star Wars.

So let’s call Annihiliaton an action-spy-thriller-sci-fi-epic set in the Star Wars universe. If that doesn’t make you want to buy it, nothing will.

The Old Republic: Annihilation is slated for release on November 13, 2012 in hardcover.

The Future of Star Wars: Allston, Zahn, Karpyshyn and Kemp

With the end of the Fate of the Jedi series, the future of the Star Wars Expanded Universe is wide open. However, there are only a few books on the near horizon after Jeff Grubb’s Scourge. In August, fans will get the tenth addition to the X-Wing series written by long time favorite Aaron Allston. In December the king of the EU, Timothy Zahn, will deliver his Han Solo heist book Scoundrels. Old Republic and Sith extraordinaire author Drew Karpyshyn will pen his fifth novel Annihilation in November. And relative newcomer Paul S. Kemp has a mysterious “ambitious” duology that will launch early next year. Looking at the playing field, there’s one clear picture: there’s something for everyone. Secondly, Alexander Irvine’s Nomi Sunrider novel has been canceled.

Lastly, Timothy Zahn’s Han Solo novel will be out Winter 2012. You can see all the details here, as well as a recap of the upcoming books and their release dates (no dates have changed).
