Transformers: Primacy #4 is the climatic end to the series. As the third arc by Chris Metzen, Flint Dille and Livio Ramondelli, they show just what you can do with a Transformers comic. It’s the perfect melding of storytelling and artwork. The characters come to life through both the dialog and the imagery. With the stakes higher than ever, this issue packs a punch and delivers with explosive, action packed panels and gripping character face-offs. In the battle between Megatron and Optimus Prime, only one of them can be the victor.

First off, the artwork in this issue is amazing. Okay, amazing is pretty strong, but these panels are really gorgeous looking. Just the colors alone are lush and eye-popping. But Livio pulls out all the stops for some great shots in this issue. Keep in mind that this is artwork of giant machines fighting and talking to each other. The fact that he can bring these things to visual life and make the readers believe these are living beings is a true testament to what he’s able to pull off.

Behold the glory that is Transformers: Primacy #4. That’s a full page interior panel worthy of a cover.

Furthermore, you’ve got Chris Metzen and Flint Dille laying out a great story for the characters. They’ve shown a tremendous talent for brings Megatron and Optimus Prime to life and showcasing the essence of their characters. Through these stories, and especially in this issue, they highlight the core dynamics and the struggle between these icons. As complex as he may be, Megatron is still the villain, and despite the odds, Optimus is ever the good guy doing what’s right.

I don’t want to ruin any of the story or the surprises in store, so I’ll keep it simple. If you’ve read up to Primacy #3, then #4 will not disappoint you. If you haven’t started reading this series, then put the trade paperback on your wishlist because you won’t want to miss this. For anyone who is a Transformers fan, this is a must read comic. However Primacy, and really the two arcs that came before it, transcend the Transformers franchise and simply achieve great storytelling. It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan of giant, transforming robots or not, this is a series worth reading. If you’re like me, it’ll make you a Transformers fan. I give Transformers: Primacy #4 a five out of five metal bikinis. It doesn’t get better than this.
