Monstrosity lives up to its name in Monstrosity #3. Megatron unleashes the monster within as he faces his last challenge on Junkion. The Dynobots flip out when attacked by the Decepticons. Then Scorponok raises the stakes by unleashing the monster underneath the surface of Cybertron. What it’s called we don’t quite know, but it’s big enough to give Metroplex a run for his money.

The story starts out on Junkion with Megatron. He’s a little worse for wear with mismatched eyes, limbs and a low supply of energon. However, he’s still got his determination to survive at all costs. With Pentius in tow, Megatron faces his last challenge: the Terrorcons. I really liked their appearance. They each have a mythological monster feel to them. With a multitude of fearsome heads lashing out at Megatron all at once, he goes through quite the battle to put them down.

“At last…the student…becomes the master. You are…truly…monstrous.” -Pentius

Optimus Prime is still dealing with politics on Cybertron as people are fleeing the planet, however things heat up when the Decepticons attack. Under orders from Scorponok, they show no mercy, but their relentlessness merely unleashed the fury of the Dynobots alt-mode. There’s some great dialog tossed in from the Decepticons. Combined with the great artwork, it’s one of the highlights of the issue. But the wonderful dialog and art are pretty seamless through the whole issue. This is pretty much just another great issue in awesome series. It’s hard to beat more of a good thing.

Yet the final couple pages of the issue raise the bar up another notch. Not only is there a wonderful monologue by Scorponok, but there is a tense transition as something terrible is released. Something ancient. Something horrible. And in the final full page panel, we see something akin to Godzilla towering far above the puny Decepticons who were foolish enough to wake it. It’s a great cliffhanger for the next issue as it ratchets up the anticipation. I can’t wait to see what this new Transformer can do.

If you haven’t jumped onto this series yet, Monstrosity #3 just shows that there are no signs of this one slowing down. The story is solid with great dialog, characterizations and plot developments. The artwork looks gorgeous and really brings the story to life, defying the two dimensional borders of the page with vivid lighting and nice panel transitions. I give Monstrosity #3 a five out of five metal bikinis.
