IDW did a Free Comic Book Day issue of Star Wars Adventures for 2019, and this one ties into the Tales From Vader’s Castle series. While snooping around the castle, Crater tells Lina about the lost treasure of Rane Mahal. This leads to a story about Han and Chewie as they help an alien to find the lost treasure of the pirate queen Rane Mahal while be chased by some hostile pirates led by a Weequay named Gwarm. They have to hunt down three droids, only one of which contains the coordinates for the treasure. Of course this means the last droid they find is the right one. Then they get double crossed. Then they find the treasure and everyone gets double crossed. But then Han ends the day by double crosses everyone again.

It’s an okay story. It had promise. The problem is it’s a bit convoluted with a couple plot issues. Spoilers here – there is no treasure. The treasure was a lie because Rane Mahal was stranded and needed someone to show up and help her. But why would you send off three hidden droids that only one person was able to find, and then booby trap two of them which would further decrease your odds of anyone ever finding you? The idea of lying about the treasure in order to get rescue is sound, but the gimmick with the droids didn’t make sense. Furthermore, the alien Han and Chewie was helping also worked for Gwarm, which also didn’t make any sense. They didn’t need Han and Chewie to disarm the booby traps, especially since all they did was say the magic word and set them off. There wasn’t any skill to it, and Gwarm had plenty of goons to waste on them if they happened to be lethal. It was just another unnecessary layer that felt like poor writing. It could have worked, it just didn’t get executed very well.

The artworks okay. Derek Charm has his own colorful, cartoony style that we’ve seen in many issues of Star Wars Adventures. It’s not my favorite, but it’s not that bad.

All in all, I give this one a two out of five baby nexus.
