Road Kill
“Road Kill” is a short story set in the Dan Shamble, Zombie P.I. series by Kevin J. Anderson. It’s about half an hour long, but packs in a lot of action and mystery. Overall, it was a fun read and I liked it a lot better than “Stakeout At the Vampire Circus” which was an earlier short story in the series. This one holds up better to the quality of the novels, in my opinion.
The main plot of the story revolves around an illicit blood market operation being run by a gangster family. A vampire named Sebastian Bund has agreed to be a witness in a case against the gangster family, but the police force in the Unnatural Quarter have been having a hard time keeping witnesses safe. Sebastian isn’t the first person to step forward in the case. With one witness dying after the next, the police have turned to Dan Shamble for help. While Dan is not Superman, he does have a reputation for getting the job done, and he may be just the outside help they need to break the case.
For a couple bucks, the story is worth it. It’s a nice intro for new readers, and fans of the series will surely enjoy it. I give it a four out of five metal bikinis.
