I Hate Fairyland #9 is another solid issue as Gert gets back to some fun adventures. From card games with ne’er-do-wells to a journey to the center of the holding hat, things get wild, crazy and violent. While the fate of Fairyland may not be on the line in this issue, Gert’s life could be. At the very least, she has a gambling debt to settle. Nevertheless, it all leads to a bunch of fun.

It all starts with a card game. There’s some familiar faces, as well as some new ones, but the game turns the tables on Gert and forces her to dive into the holding hat for a piece of treasure. This in turn leads to a treasure hunt since Gert has collected quite a few things over the last 30 years. Among those things are some nasty enemies. Stuck amongst her treasures, some reluctant allies and an unforeseen enemy with a ferocious appetite, it all builds up to some chaotic battles. Oh, and a few laughs.

Not only does the story knock out another fun journey with some humorous dialog, but the artwork delivers the visual impact that makes the whole thing work. The new characters look awesome, with some of them literally chewing up the scenery. There’s some big two page spreads showing off the action, and while things jump around every now and then, it always returns to some good scenes. Aside from the carnage, some of the panels do a great job of sneaking in some funny imagery. I especially enjoyed the scene with Larry and the octopus. And the power loader from Aliens? That’s just perfect.

With stunning artwork and a immensely entertaining little story, I Hate Fairyland #9 scores high marks with a five out of five metal bikinis.
