I Hate Fairyland #5 brings an end to the first arc and wraps up a great adventure full of violence and hilarity. Filled with beautiful artwork and laughs, this is one series every adult should read. It’s a fitting end for Gertrude, the terror of Fairyland, and an interesting portent for things to come.

When we last left off, Gert was after the powers of doom in the Lands of Not. After conquering the dungeons of Darketh Dreaddeath, she was justly rewarded. Yet meanwhile, Happy has been on her own quest to get the key, and low and behold, she’s successful. In fact she’s just one step away from opening the door home and forever sealing Gertrude away in the horrors of Fairyland.

Now it’s time for some serious spoilers.

First, there is gore. Gertrude slays the sun as it dares to narrate Happy’s victory. There is a giant, evil dragon that serves as Gert’s steed. Following the dungeons of Darketh Dreaddeth, she now has “super evil, kill-you-so-hard powers.” She eats rainbow magic for breakfast. Better yet, she puts Happy in the ground. And she kills the queen.

Unfortunately, that’s her undoing.

You see, Gert had it made. She had the key. She opened the door. Freedom was staring her in the face. But the queen goaded her one last time. The result is the perfect ending to a spectacular series. While there is more to come, this one has made it’s mark as a darkly funny and extremely imaginative tale in both the written and visual spectrums. I give I Hate Fairyland #5 a five out of five metal bikinis. It’s perfect. It also finishes the arc off with a flawless five out of five rating for every issue. Seriously, this is one comic you’ll want to pick up the trade paperback of in April when it comes out.
