I Hate Fairyland brings a smile to my heart and issue #4 is wickedly awesome. Gert and Cloudia go at it. Happy continues to trapeze blissfully through Fairyland. Then Gert gets a great idea: it’s time to level up with one of the seven evil dooms. What could they be? I don’t know, but I can’t wait to find out.
As with all the previous issues, the writing and the artwork are top notch. There’s always something to enjoy, be it a funny line or an amusing image. There’s a realm of mirrors, snot mountains, and a place where everything is made of pillows. There are monsters, over-the-top cute characters, and a few buckets of violence. It’s a fun mixture that just hits all the right notes.
As usual, the issue opens with the death of another narrator, this time a caterpillar. Gert soon finds out what a serious threat Happy is and makes plans to end her. This leads to a fun journey montage of wild places. All of it leads to a realm of skulls and a skull guy on a throne of skulls in his skull castle. The caretaker of the evil dooms freely offers his power to Gert…if she can survive his dungeon and the monster within.
With lots of laughs and absolutely beautiful artwork, I Hate Fairyland #4 is another outstanding issue. I give it a five out of five metal bikinis and look forward to the next one which will wrap up the first arc. Great job by Skottie Young, Jean-Francois Beaulieu with his amazing colors, and Nate Piekos for the fun emphasis on the “mother puffers”, “fluffins”, “dips” and “shishes”.
