I Hate Fairyland #10

I Hate Fairyland #10

Writer/Artist/Cover Artist: Skottie Young
Colorist: Jean-Francois Beaulieu
Letterer: Nate Piekos

I Hate Fairyland #10 wraps up the second arc with a bang, a side trip, and a giant right hook. There’s a puzzle guarded by a strange little gnome. There’s a giant beast of destruction threatening all of Fairyland. There’s time travel. Heck, we even get battle post-apocalyptic Gert! It’s one wild ride.

But all rides have to kick off somewhere, and with Gert, she has the simple choice between two hallways. The gnome guardian gives her a riddle, and it’s up to Gert to make the right choice. Yet nothing ever goes right for Gert. That said, Skottie Young does something special with this issue. Rather than just showing the bad outcome of Gert’s decision, he plunges readers 100 years into the future to reveal the full devastation of her bad choice. This in turn gives readers a peek at the future. We see what happens to Larry, Gert and Duncan. The result is pretty epically awesome. Fire, brimstone, wizards and a kaiju.

The story is equal parts brilliant, crazy and hilarious. Tying all those elements together is the rich artwork that brings it to life. They spare no expense as they dish out some of their best panels yet. There are full two-page spreads of titanic battles. The colors are gorgeous. There’s new characters that add to the hilarity. And there are blank pages! Okay, maybe the blank pages are nothing to shout about, but it’s kind of funny. The issue runs longer than normal which makes up for it, so in the end, the artwork is still great.

With a story that’s pure fun sprinkled with doses of rampant action and belly busting laughs, I Hate Fairyland #10 is solid gold. It’s avoids paths already traveled, hits readers with something fresh, and manages to keep the series on top of its game. I give it a five out of five metal bikinis.
