Galaxy’s Edge #1 sets up a framing story of some crooks trying to get Dok-Ondar to reveal the location of some dangerous but valuable item. Meanwhile, they expose readers to Disney’s theme park and the sights and attractions that await us all if we ever get there. Along the way, we also get a Han Solo story about how he and Chewbacca once procured a Sarlacc for Dok.

The issue opens with one of the crooks, a shapeshifter named Remex. We catch a glimpse of the First Order, but they don’t show up fro the rest of the issue, so we’re left to assume they’ll be back later. We get a look at the other two crooks, Kendoh and Wooro, then a peek at Dok’s Den of Antiquities. From there, it’s storytime as he talks about his baby sarlacc and we see the little adventure Han and Chewie went on to get it. The issue ends back with the framing story as we see what the crooks are up to, but not what they’re after. Not yet at least.

It’s an interesting start for the story. Despite being an obvious product placement for Disney’s new theme parks, it does introduce us to this Ithorian named Doc who collects rare items. The Han and Chewie story is fun, and while it doesn’t have anything to do with the rest of the story, I think we might be in for a bunch of these side stories in each issue. The big question is what are the crooks after and how will the First Order play into all of this? It’s a good start for the story and there’s still plenty of time for all of that to play out.

The artwork is pretty good. There’s a lot of detail, good likenesses of the characters, and a nice balance between being able to draw both the aliens and ships, the humans, and the scenery. The coloring is bright and lush with lots of lighting to bring everything to life. No complaints with the visuals, it’s good stuff.

With a nice start to the story and good artwork, I give Galaxy’s Edge #1 a five out of five metal bikinis. While this isn’t essential reading yet for the Star Wars universe, it is worth checking out before you head to the theme park.
