Doctor Aphra #23 complicates the plot as “The Catastrophe Con” comes closer to an end. Tam Posla gets pulled back into the plot, which brings along Triple Zero and BT. Aphra tries to steal some treasure which puts everyone in jeopardy, and one of the members of Aphra’s crew seems to be betraying her. It’s getting murky as allegiances shift and conflict, but with everything in motion, it’s hard to see where this is going to end.

The issue opens with what looks like the death of the Modal Nodes. Aphra makes a call to Tam Posla to try and trick him into rescuing her. Triple Zero listens in on the conversation to find out where Aphra is. Back on Accresker Jail, the place is failing apart, so escape becomes imminent. They locate an escape pod, but it’s location requires some rearranging of the station in order to enable them to use it. This leads to some deaths, and the unleashing of the Jedi hive mind fungus thing. Sana and Tolvan have a moment about Aphra, and then Tolvan and Aphra have a moment about their relationship. The issue ends with a message being sent out to Vader, pretty much a taunt that says “come get us.” The question is, would that really work as a rescue option? I’m not a 100% sure that was the intention, but either way, things are going to get messy in the next issue.

The story is still pretty interesting in this issue, but I did notice that the artwork didn’t see as good as previous issues. None of the panels really jumped out at me as “oooh” or “ahhh” moments. Quite a few of the panels seem lackluster and I mostly found myself reading the words rather than focusing on the imagery. Perhaps the cartoonish style of the characters in this one wasn’t gelling for me, and perhaps the coloring was a little duller than normal, but I definitely found myself enjoying the artwork way less than normal.

With weaker artwork but still a descent story, I give Doctor Aphra #23 a four out of five metal bikinis.
