Zula and Davis 01 take on the xenomorphs in Aliens: Defiance #2 with no holds barred. From cover to cover, Zula really stands out in this one as we see her character in action. Coupled with the gorgeous artwork, it makes for a great comic.

This issue opens with Zula and Davis tracking down a possible space station infected with the xenomorphs. They investigate and find the creatures, then the chaos ensues as battle erupts. Yet they manage to make it out alive. While the dialog in this issue isn’t bad, the setup of the story, the layouts, and the quality of the artwork is what sells it. It has an extremely cinematic feel to it. In fact many of the panels don’t have any words at all. Instead, they let the pictures speak for themselves. Rather than the imagery adding emphasis to the words, it’s the other way around, and it works splendidly.

Issue #1 had some promise, but issue #2 really impressed me. I like the way this series is developing and how the creators are upping their game. Zula is a fun main character. She’s someone overcoming a lot of obstacles, and she does it with grit. It’s just the kind of character you need to drive an attack against insurmountable odds. The real question, though, is where will the overall story be going? What will Zula’s character arc look like? What’s the endgame? Hopefully the series pulls off something nice, because they’ve got my full attention.

I give Aliens: Defiance #2 a five out of five metal bikinis. It’s a great comic and definitely worth checking out.
