Movie Review: ‘Shazam’

It took me a while, but I finally went to see Shazam!. I’m glad I caught it while it was still in the theater because this movie was fun. A lot of fun. The story was great, the characters were great, the villain was portrayed excellently by Mark Strong and they even did a fantastic job with the monster designs. It was a solid movie all around and it had me wondering, “when was the last time I saw a super hero movie this good?”

Of course, there are no shortage of super hero movies these days. With Marvel and DC both cranking out comic book films, and other non-affiliated films joining in, there is hardly a season of the year where there isn’t one on the screen. Shazam‘s direct competition was Captain Marvel. While Marvel won that one in terms of box office money, I’d easily say Shazam! was a better movie. The writing and flow of the story was just plain better. I also enjoyed it a lot more than Aquaman or Ant-Man and the Wasp. It’s certainly not going to approach something like Avengers: Endgame, but that’s not expected. Continue Reading Movie Review: ‘Shazam’…

Movie Review: ‘Suicide Squad’

August 6, 2016 at 8:25 am | Posted in DC Entertainment, Movies, Reviews | 1 Comment

There’s been a lot of hype for Suicide Squad as the competition between DC and Marvel has heated up. When it comes to the big screen, Marvel reigns supreme, and DC is looking to take the crown. While the Suicide Squad isn’t a complete miss, it does fail to threaten Marvel’s box office supremacy. It’s a great idea with some great moments, however it falls short of what it could have been.

In a way, Suicide Squad is the antithesis of The Avengers. Whereas the Avengers movies are clean, polished powerhouses of good guy team-ups, the Suicide Squad is a dirty, chaotic mess of the bad guys. Because of that overall feel and theme, the film can afford to get away with some of that messiness, even though it still hurts the film overall. The editing and flow of the movie is a little clunky as backstories are hamfistedly shoved in at the beginning as some of the characters are introduced. Other flashbacks are awkwardly dropped later in the movie. That flashbacks in of themselves aren’t bad, and they do give audiences a taste of who these people are, but the way the director put them into the film lacks a bit of finesse. They’re just kind of shoved in there with some blunt narration. There’s no subtlety, and not much style to the way they tried to integrate most of the backstories and flashbacks into the movie. On top of that, there’s some issues with the overall direction of the film. As long as you don’t look to deeply into anything, it’s fine, but when you start examining things are trying to put things together, the story and elements start to fall apart. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been in the headlines for a long time now with tons of promotion and expectations. Yet with its release, it received a new bar of expectation, one that couldn’t get any lower. From internet memes of the interview with Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, to countless reviews and commentary on social media saying how bad the movie is, I was prepared for the worst. Nevertheless, it was one of the movies I had to see. Surprisingly…I liked it. Continue Reading Movie Review: ‘Batman v Superman’…

Warner Bros & DC Entertainment had some reveals about the tv show, Arrow at SDCC.  A third season villain was announced: Ra’s Al Ghul.  The Season three teaser trailer was long on info we already know, and short on new stuff, but we do know Canary will be back, and there will be a new player in town evidently trying to take over Queen Consolidated.  Now if only someone can get Thea to stop whining so much.  And make sense as a character.

As an added bonus, when a fan requested it, Stephen Amell flashed his very nicely ripped abs.
