Movie Review: ‘Birds of Prey’

To put it simply, Birds of Prey was a hot mess. The only good thing about the movie was Harley Quinn. It’s a shame because Margot Robbie is great as Quinn, but it appears DC can’t figure out how to make a good movie around her.

If you are a huge Harley Quinn fan, it’s still worth seeing because, let’s face it, you take what you can get. But there’s some cringe worthy moments in this film. A prime example is the big moment when Black Canary uses her special power and Harley skates out in front, propelled by her voice. It looked bad and it played out poorly. It just…felt…horrible. Some of the dialog was also cringe worthy. And most of the characters were poorly done and underdeveloped. So much time was spent on Harley that most of the other characters suffered. In fact the whole “Birds of Prey” concept took a backseat to Harley Quinn’s storyline.

On a basic level, it was a combination of bad directing and bad writing. When it comes to details, there are a lot of things you can point to and say were bad. For instance, Ewan McGreggor’s character is Black Mask, the big bad of the film. However he only wears the mask at the end and they never explain what the deal is with it. It doesn’t serve any purpose to the story. Also, a bunch of bad guys show up at the end of the movie and they all inexplicably put on masks before they do battle. The little details are not subtly tied into the story to help it all make one big cohesive movie. On the flip side, some things are not subtle at all. In fact the film is often extremely heavy handed with driving home what is going on. Like when people start attacking Harley Quinn, the movie not only takes the time to write on screen why they don’t like her, but will often stop and do a flashback to show it. They way it was done was jarring, blaring, and succeeded in throwing you out of the movie and the moment.

Yet as bad as some parts were, there were still lots of moments a fan can enjoy. I didn’t hate the movie, nor was I bored. But the movie made sure to remind me it was bad throughout. That’s why I would still recommend it for huge fans of Harley Quinn. I would not recommend it for anyone who is a fan of any of the other characters in the film. If you don’t like Harley, there is absolutely no reason to see this movie. As is, I give it a two out of five metal bikinis.
