Max Reebo’s Pick of the Week: “Long Black Train”

Max Reebo’s pick this week is “Long Black Train” by House of Freaks.

I had never heard of the band House of Freaks before, but Pandora thought I might be interested. While I’m still not certain they have anything else to offer, there is one song they pulled off that’s absolutely brilliant: “Long Black Train.” This was off of their first album, Monkey on a Chain Gang (1987).

House of Freaks was formed back in the 80’s with just two band members: Bryan Harvey on vocals and guitar; Johnny Hott on percussion. From 1987 to 1994, they turned out five albums (one of them an EP). Afterwards the band broke up with both members joining the supergroup Gutterball. They did two albums, then Hott moved on to the band Cracker. Sadly, Bryan Harvey was murdered along with his wife and children on New Year’s Day 2006. While Bryan Harvey is no longer with us, his music will live on.
