Movie Review: ‘The Meg’
August 21, 2018 at 6:52 am | Posted in Movies, Reviews | Leave a commentThe nice thing about The Meg is that the trailer makes it clear that this is just a big dumb action movie with a giant shark. Throw in Jason Statham for some star power, decent CGI, action and some humor and you get a fun movie.
First off, The Meg is interesting in that they lean towards a more light hearted, fun action movie than a gruesome gory horror movie. There is violence and some scares, but its much more situational that graphic. The shark does eat people, but due to the size of the shark, it’s typically not that violent. In fact most of the gore in the movie is that of the sharks being hurt. And by the end of the movie, it’s interesting how few people are actually eaten by the sharks. You could argue that perhaps they pulled back on the violence just a bit too much as there is one scene that just begs for some mass carnage when the meg is on the beach with thousands of swimmers.
They pulled together a good cast for the movie, and the writing and dialog keeps the whole thing enjoyable. As long as you keep in mind that its just a goofy fun action movie, it works. There’s fun moments, fun action, fun characters, and the giant shark is pretty fun. It’s not going to beat Jaws for best shark movie ever, and it’s not as ridiculous as Sharknado, but it’s a fun time.
So whether you go out and enjoy this one on the big screen or wait for it on the small screen, The Meg is worth checking out if you like fun action movies, sharks, and Jason Statham. I give it a three out of five metal bikinis.
