Movie Review: ‘Mission Impossible: Fallout’

As the sixth film in the franchise, Mission Impossible: Fallout is not a movie to break the mold or achieve ridiculous expectations. Quite simple, this is an action film starring Tom Cruise. If you like Tom Cruise and you like action films, then this film fills that niche. For fans of the Mission Impossible franchise, it’s yet another entry for you to get some enjoyment, and there’s some nice little tie-ins to make it feel like it’s part of a larger story. But at the end of the day, it’s not much more than that.

The gist of the story is pretty simple. A terrorist organization is trying to get a hold of some plutonium weapons so they can threaten the world with their anarchist agenda. It’s up to Ethan Hunt and his team of operatives to stop them. The mission gets more complicated as the CIA questions his ability to get the job done and introduces a new member into his team played by Henry Cavill. On top of that, Ethan has to free the bad guy from the previous film in order to make a trade for the plutonium weapons. Throw in car/motorcycle chases, a helicopter chase, a roof top chase, and lots of action and fight scenes, some quirky one liners and a tense bomb defusing scene and you get an enjoyable action flick.

So, is it the best action movie of the year? Not really. Is it the best film of the Mission Impossible franchise? Probably not. But if you’re just looking for a fun action flick to tune out to for 2 hours and 27 minutes, then this one will do the trick. As is, I give it a two and a half out of five metal bikinis. It’s not great, but it was an enjoyable one time watch.
