Movie Review: ‘Action Point’

The trailer for Action Point looked pretty funny. It looked like a comedy that could work. Sadly, this film failed to deliver. There’s not a lot of laughs, the story is mediocre, and, well, it’s not one I’d recommend checking out.

The story follows Johnny Knoxville who plays a character who used to run an amusement park. It starts out with him as an old grandpa baby sitting one of his grand kids and telling her the story of the park he used to have. So it flashes back to then, and most of the movie is told from there. The core of the movie is him dealing with his daughter who is visiting him and their strained relationship which they try to mend.

The amusement park is pure chaos. All the rides are unsafe, there’s chaos with people doing whatever they want, and the staff is drunk, high and crazy. There’s some Jackass like stunts in the movie, but it doesn’t translate that well to the screen, and most of the laughs fail. A few work. In the audience I was with, it was pretty quiet throughout the film as there just wasn’t a lot of humor, and what was there didn’t land well.

Here’s the thing I didn’t realize and what the movie failed to make use of – there actually was a park like this. Action Point is based on a park in New Jersey that was called Action Park. It had ridiculous rides, including the down hill sleds and a water slide with a full loop. It was extremely dangerous with people constantly getting hurt, and a quite a few fatalities. The thing is, the real life park would have made a great story. Action Point, however, only loosely takes on the idea and goes it’s own direction with it. As such, you get a goofy comedy that’s pretty lackluster. I wouldn’t recommend this movie to anyone unless you can watch it for free. I give it a one out of five metal bikinis.
