Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

Blast Points Podcast: Episode 120 is the usual fun as they talk Solo, Motley Crue, the new Solo TV spots, and the Empire photos. Then they talk The Force Awakens as they travel back in time to recall the hype, the trailers, the leaked concept art, things that were leaked or revealed that weren’t in the movie, and wild rumors. It’s a fun trip down memory lane.

Podcast Network: N/A, Runtime: 54 minutes, Audio Quality: Excellent, Editing: Excellent, Hosts: Jason, and Gabe, Rating: Fun

Coffee With Kenobi: Episode 119 Dan talks with Mark Von Ohlen and Lacey Gilleran about Topps cards, Solo, Denny’s cards, working with actors for autographs, Mark shares a shirtless Adam Driver story, and then they go over comic news, magazine news, and game news. Afterwrds, Dan previews two new podcasts he’ll be on. One is a clip of him, Tom and Cory talking about Solo which is from their new weekly Patreon show, and the other one features Dan and Jim Hill in a podcast called Looking At Lucafilm. The audio quality for Mark and Lacey isn’t the best as Mark has some background noise and Lacey is calling over a phone from the sound of it. Not too bad though.

Podcast Network: Coffee With Kenobi, Runtime: 1 hour 23 minutes, Audio Quality: Good, Editing: Excellent, Host: Dan Z, Rating: Good

Comic Book Noob: The Black Order is hosted by just Regina and Scott, but they do a great job of going over Thanos’ minions, The Black Order. They talk about Corvis Glave, Proxima Midnight, Kull Obsidian/Black Dwarf, Ebony Maw and Super Giant. They go over the powers, personalities and stories for each. Lots of great info. Excellent primer for Infinity War, and, given the timing, I’m making this one my Pick of the Week.

Podcast Network: Assembly of GeeksRuntime: 27 minutes, Audio Quality: Excellent, Editing: Excellent, Hosts: Scott, and Regina, Rating: Pick of the Week

Fangirls Going Rogue: Episode 57 they talk Solo, new trailers, TV spots, and other info. Then they share their thoughts on Last Shot, talk millennial pink, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, recasting, Timeless, and Star Wars wish lists. Full of Sith: Episode CCLXV focuses on Kylo Ren/Ben Solo as they each share their thoughts on the character, talk about their favorite Kylo moments, and ponder whether Kylo resented the New Republic because of it tearing his parents away from him as a kid. Podcast Network: N/A, Runtime: 1 hour 8 minutes, Audio Quality: Excellent, Editing: Excellent, Hosts: Holly, Bryan, and Mike, Rating: Good

Happy Beeps: How We Got the Directing Duo Behind Episode IX touches on Victoria Mahoney’s career, an early tweet that hinted at the news, Ava DuVernay’s part in The Force Awakens, and J.J. Abram’s community outreach work and comments on diversity. I’ll be honest, the focus of the episode jumped around a bit and didn’t dive as deeply as I would have liked into the various subjects that were brought up. Might be a good one for a follow up episode in order to go more in depth into say Victoria Mahoney’s career or J.J. Abram’s outreach work.

First, he sets the scene for 1975, painting a picture of what that time was like when the movie came out. He provides some backstory on the movie, summarizes the film, and talks about how ambitious it was for them at the time to film on location…on the ocean. The episode includes audio clips of Spielberg and others talking about working on the movie and difficulties they encountered, as well as the music. Dave goes into how the music is used to represent the shark, how the musical notes are used, and there’s audio of John Williams talking about it. Dave talks about how tempo is used to represent the distance of the shark, how important it was to the overall success of the film that the mechanical shark didn’t work, and Dave delves into a mini-bio of John Williams. He covers John’s history as a pianist, working for famous composers, his TV work, his film work, how John Williams and Spielberg met, how Jaws came after the death of his wife, and Dave wraps up this first episode with the upbeat music for the humans.
