Movie Review: ‘Tomb Raider’

Tomb Raider is a great example of how to successfully turn a video game franchise into a film. There’s action, great characters, a good story, and it’s fun from beginning to end. With Alicia Vikander in the lead role as Laura Croft, they completely captured the essence of the character and the Indiana Jones style vibe of the series. This one is worth checking out.

The movie starts off with a voice over from Laura’s father, Richard, who is played by Dominic West. It sets up the story that the movie eventually explores, an adventure that leads to a remote Japanese island that is the final resting place of an ancient death empress. Everything builds up to the trip to the island, the action that unfolds there, and lots of puzzle traps as they explore the tomb. However, before it gets there, the movie takes the time to focus on Laura and introduce her to the audience.

Interestingly enough, our first introduction to Laura is her getting her butt kicked in a mixed MMA style sparring fight. On one hand, it show’s she’s fallible. She’s not some super hero that wins at everything. Yet on the other hand, it also shows her tenacity and will to keep going even when she should quit. All of the scenes showing her before she becomes the Tomb Raider do a great job of setting up her character, thus creating investment and making the rest of the movie that much better. Throughout the film, Vikander does a stellar job, and coupled with the writing and direction, it works perfectly.

Nevertheless, a good hero is often said to only be as good as the villain they’re up against. In this case it’s Mathias Vogel played by Walton Goggins. As a fan of the bad guys, I was really glad this one panned out. Goggins nails it as the very sinister bad guy archaeologist. In a way he’s like Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark, an archaeologist that’s in the profession for all the wrong reasons. But Mathias wastes no time in letting everyone know just how evil he is. It’s well done.

Overall, this movie did just about everything right. The characters were fun and entertaining, there were neat action elements, there’s humor, there’s drama, and the story is interesting. If you’re looking for a good action movie, Tomb Raider is worth seeing. I give it a four out of five metal bikinis.
