Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

Blast Points: Episode 107 goes over the Solo synopsis, the new Star Wars Rebels trailer, then they discuss Star Wars: The Interactive Video Board Game: Assault on the Death Star! It came out in 1996 but somehow I was completely unaware of this game. They talk about Dave Prowse and James Earl Jones returning for the role, they play audio clips from the VHS tape, and go over this much overlooked piece of Star Wars history. Very fun episode. Plus there’s an interesting listener question on what would have happened if Luke didn’t leave Dagobah.

Coffee With Kenobi: Episode 104 features Dan and Cory. Cory talks Star Wars Battlefront 2, they talk about Star Wars gifts, Dan interviews Jay Soderberg and they talk about his issues with The Last Jedi (good discussion). Then Dan and Cory talk The Last Jedi, what it was like after second viewing, and Cory’s issues with the movie (also a good discussion). Lastly, they wrap up with their takeaways from 2017. Excellent episode.

Coffee With Kenobi: Episode 105 Dan talks with Scott Murray and Tyler Wiggins about The Last Jedi. Then Dan talks with Michael Moreci about his new book, and about The Last Jedi. They talk about wrestling with Luke and our expectations. Tom joins them as they talk Solo and fears of failure, plus other news items. Afterwards Dan talks with his son Mason about his first time seeing Star Wars. Tyler’s audio is a less than optimal, but otherwise a good episode.

They talk Forces of Destiny comics, box office numbers, and Disney’s virtual half marathon. They discuss The Last Jedi, multiple viewings, what they noticed, the failures as a theme, Poe, Luke, the music, book info and the portrayal of the characters, plus other thoughts and observations.

Geek Out Loud: The 2018 Marathon Kickoff Show features Steve and Shazbazzar (in studio) as they have a fun conversation about anything and nothing. From a crocodile in Russia, to poop knives and cereal. It’s not Star Wars, but it is fun.

Kanata’s Castle: Episode 23 begins with some discussion of Solo and The Hunger Games, then they roll into The Last Jedi as they talk double meanings, and themes like loss, temptation, and redemption. Good discussion.

Rebel Force Radio: Episode 1.19.18 covers the AARP awards, they talk Plagueis, Snoke, Rian Johnson’s comments on Empire podcast, they talk Solo, the Star Wars mention on This Is Us, and then about an hour in, they talk with John Marcoux which is the highlight of the show. John has some really great observations about The Last Jedi as he delves into mythology, religion and Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey. John talks about Luke’s refusal of the call to adventure, his resistance to change, his loss of faith, the lightning ending his refusal of the call, going beyond the pairs of opposites, the similarity to the Buddha’s three tests, the parallel between Luke and Obi-Wan’s sacrifices in order to buy time for others’ escape, and some really deep connections. The conversation with John makes this episode my pick of the week as it adds a lot to The Last Jedi and provides plenty to think on. Great stuff.

Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode 199 covers Rich’s birthday plans, confirmation of Williams doing Episode IX and theme for Solo, music speculation, and they talk about special screening of American Graffiti which the attended and which also included a Q&A with Rian Johnson. Then they interview Paul Warren who talks about his roles in The Last Jedi, The Force Awakens, Guardians of the Galaxy, Harry Potter, Captain America: The First Avenger, X-Men: First Class and Ready Player One. Paul has some fun stories which makes this one a good one to check out. Great interview.

Superhero Therapy: Doctor Who Psychology Dustin and Dr. Scarlet are joined by Alan Kistler and Jouse Cardona about Doctor Who. They talk about the Doctor’s origin, his key trait of compassion, the meaning behind the title/name, the Time Lords, the Master, a brief recap of the main shifts in the show, thoughts on the female Doctor and they discuss the last episode. Overall a great discussion of what and who Doctor Who is. As someone who has never watched any of the Doctor Who shows, this was a great episode to learn what the show is about.

Talk Star Wars: Episode 103 features Marc, Rob and Paul as they talk about Rey and Skywalker legacy, a Tatooine anthology rather than an Obi-Wan movie, Rey’s staff, Empire interview with Rian Johnson, listener The Last Jedi questions, Rey’s lineage, the cave scene and Rey changing her hair after that moment, Maz, what will they do with Poe, could Ben Solo/Kylo and C-3PO have a bound, the exploits of the Jedi and in-universe pop culture, Luke and expectations, crazy fan theories, and Solo concerns.

They Dave and Mikey go over their top ten not in 2017 movies. Thus movies they saw in 2017 but weren’t released in 2017. Fun movie conversation.

The Fandom Files: Episode 13 features an interview with Leland Chee. Leland talks about being a game tester, tracking data, the Legends decision, working with The Clone Wars, George’s involvement with comics and books, working with filmmakers, and more. Unfortunately Leland’s audio isn’t the best, and Leland and the host are both fast talkers so, for me, this was a hard episode to listen to and absorb all of what they were saying. Was a bit of a chore to listen to.

The Resistance Broadcast: Episode 97 they discuss The Last Jedi, the secrets of The Last Jedi video, they talk Solo, Star Wars Rebels (pre-trailer drop), and listener questions. Good discussion but it felt a bit too long.

Wookiee Radio: Episode 50 features Star Wars cover artist John Tyler Christopher. They talk with John about doing the Star Wars covers, and some general Star Wars discussion. Great conversation and definitely worth checking out for comic fans, especially if you like John’s action figure covers.
