Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review. There’s also a new porg champion this week.

Beltway Banthas: Episode 39 goes from discussing a living constitution to Force Friday. They discuss Trevorrow being fired (pre-J.J. announcement), then they talk about the novel Inferno Squad. They do go into spoilers, so fair warning. One thing that makes their discussion unique is some of the real life comparisons they make to extremist groups around the world.

Porg Count: 4, Runtime: 1 hour 5 minutes, Rating: Good episode

Blabba the Hutt: Episode 34 features guest Craig Miller as Jamie talks to him about his work on Star Wars. Craig talks about meeting Charlie Lippencott, marketing the film at conventions, Kenner and the empty box, marketing tricks, leveraging the comics, seeing a rough cut in November, directing the Star Wars episode of Sesame Street and operating R2-D2, the 800 number for Empire, overloading AT&T’s system and leveraging that for extra marketing, what he’s doing now and other stories. Great interview.

Porg Count: 0 (Porg Free), Runtime: 1 hour 6 minutes, Rating: Great episode

Blast Points: Episode 91 starts out with the J.J. Abrams news, then they dive deep into Star Wars by taking a closer look at the sound mixes for A New Hope. They discuss the different sound mixes and go through the history of all of them, from the theatrical release all the way to the Blu-ray. They compare the Dolby mix to the Mono mix and play audio clips to illustrate the differences. You might be surprised which ones your more familiar with.

Porg Count: 1, Runtime: 1 hour 8 minutes, Rating: Fun episode

Brews and Blasters: Episode 135 starts with some voice mails as they talk about how to handle people who are misinformed, Force Friday finds, and there’s a porg song. Let me take a minute to apologize to all the podcast listeners who now have to endure porg songs because of us. Yes, we brought this upon all of fandom by daring to count the porgs in each podcast. But, somewhere out there is a porg lover rejoicing at the increase of porgs, so to that listener, we say “You’re welcome!” Also in this episode, they talk toys, helmets, Force trees, directors and writers, they cover a Rian Johnson article, and go out with the Need’em Got’em for some of the 6-inch Black Series figures, so lots of fun toy discussion. That said, this is a momentous episode for Brews and Blasters has usurped the previous Porg Champions (Fly Casual) by elevating the #PorgCount to a new all time high.

Porg Count: 265, Runtime: 1 hour 5 minutes, Rating: Fun episode

Coffee With Kenobi: Episode 86 features guests Richard Woloski and Mark Sutter as they start off with the J.J. Abrams directing news, share their thoughts, and get to some fan reactions. They also talk about the December released date for Episode IX, Galaxy’s Edge, an update on Disney’s streaming service, new details about the Canto Bight book, and porg facts. Afterwards they talk about Luke as a dark sider with regards to the Gamorrean Force choking scene in Return of the Jedi.

Porg Count: 11, Runtime: 1 hour 1 minute, Rating: Good episode

Comic Book Noob: Cloak and Dagger covers the creative origin of the characters, the characters themselves, their powers, their weaknesses and more.

Porg Count: 0 (Porg Free), Runtime: 33 minutes, Rating: Good episode

DorkLair: Episode 8 features Bill and guest host Will. Will talks about his work on reddit and his love of Star Wars collecting, then they review the S.H. Figuarts BB-9E. They talk about the stand, the sculpt, the quality and criticisms. Fair warning, listening to these episodes may cause you to open your wallet and buy these awesome figures.

Porg Count: 0 (Porg Free), Runtime: 50 minutes, Rating: Good episode

Essential Bombad Radio: Episode 24 covers the Nintendo Switch, games, pros and cons, bugs and support. They then talk about Star Wars news, the air date for Star Wars Rebels Season 4, J.J. Abrams directing Episode IX, Star Trek games and comic recommendations.

Porg Count: 11, Runtime: 52 minutes, Rating: Good episode

Fantastic Justice Squad Super Wonder Brother Friends: Episode 24 starts with some tv talk, then they tackle Logan. They start off with a non-spoiler discussion as they go over the movies strengths and weaknesses, then move on to other observations and thoughts. Afterwards they play the “Versus the World” game, then they move on to their spoiler discussion of Logan. Great stuff.

Porg Count: 0 (Porg Free), Runtime: 1 hours 21 minutes, Rating: Great episode

Fantastic Justice Squad Super Wonder Brother Friends: Episode 27 starts with some miscellaneous stuff, a contest, other podcasts, reddit and Make-A-Wish, then they get to the main topic, Spider-Man: Homecoming. They start with a non-spoiler discussion covering the strengths and weaknesses of the film, with lots of fun observations and analysis. They take a break to play a movie guessing game for the actor who have played Spider-Man, then it’s on to their full on spoiler discussion which starts 50 minutes in. This is where they dive deep into the movie for some really excellent analysis, from pondering if the Vulture could have been a vet, to all of the 80’s references. This was my first time listening into the show and I really enjoyed it. Two of the hosts are brothers, one of which is Sancho Panda who occasionally guest hosts on Fly Casual. They also had on Garrick who may or may not be a regular host (Garrick is one of the regular hosts on Fly Casual). They keep the discussions fun, but also on point. Rather than getting lost in breaking down the film’s plot, they explore the more interesting aspects of the film, be it themes, character strengths, or possible explanations for plot points. If you like movies, or in this case you liked Spider-Man: Homecoming, I highly recommend checking this one out. They’ve got good sound quality and the hosts work great together.

Porg Count: 0 (Porg Free), Runtime: 2 hours 4 minutes, Rating: Great episode

Fauxthentic History: Legends of Princess Kneesa is kind of interesting as they dive into Legends and the Ewoks cartoons to present the origin of Princess Kneesa and some of her adventures.

Porg Count: 0 (Porg Free), Runtime: 28 minutes, Rating: Great episode

Fly Casual: Episode 153 starts with pudding pops and Halloween decorations, some fake news, then they dive into comic reviews. Garrick ups his game by bringing back the limericks, but things get raunchy as they try to fill in the blank work for each limerick. This one definitely earns an explicit tag. They review Star Wars #34, Poe Dameron #18, Star Wars #35, Mace Windu #1, Doctor Aphra Annual #1, Rogue One #6, Darth Vader #5 and Captain Phasma #1. Then they head into rumors (note this is still pre-Abrams). They talk about whether Rian Johnson should be the director for Episode IX, Rian Johnson’s comments on Luke being the last Jedi, John Powell scoring the Han Solo movie, and more Rian Johnson Comments. More news than rumors, really. Not a bad episode if you don’t mind a little crudeness. Definitely not one for the kiddies.

Porg Count: 18, Runtime: 28 minutes, Rating: Fun episode

Grand Moff Talkin’: Episode 18 starts with iTunes review, show dedication, the pizza delivery guy and an intervention for Jake. Then they discuss Inferno Squad, the blurred lines between the good guys and the bad guys, thoughts on the audiobook, praise for Janina Gavankar, and lots of praise for the book. They do go into spoilers.

Porg Count: 0 (Porg Free), Runtime: 50 minutes, Rating: Good episode

Hyperspace PodBlast: Episode 30 covers leadership in Star Wars as they touch on specific leaders from Padme to Snoke.

Porg Count: 0 (Porg Free), Runtime: 27 minutes, Rating: Good episode

Rebel Force Radio: Episode 9.15.17 covers J.J. Abrams’ return and their thoughts on it. They bring on Kyle Newman to further the discussion. Kyle dives into the Trevorrow shake up and provides an alternate look at what might have really happened, and also dives into Lucasfilm playing it safe. They talk about John Landis’ comments on Star Wars, Rian Johnson’s comments on The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill as GQ Icon and a recent Harrison Ford interview. Then they have on guest Charlie Ross as they talk about his One Man Star Wars Show, his thoughts on Star Wars, and they share some fun stories.

Porg Count: 5, Runtime: 2 hours 37 minutes, Rating: Good episode

Rock Out Loud: Last Tracks starts with listener email, how the hurricane went for Steve, then they talk about their favorite last tracks on albums. Huge props to Steve for picking AC/DC “Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution.” Great song. But there’s lots of variety, from Oasis and The Doors, to My Chemical Romance and The Foo Fighters.

Porg Count: 0 (Porg Free), Runtime: 1 hour 51 minutes, Rating: Good episode

Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode 184 starts with some discussion about Colin Cantwell, then Donald Wicks comes on to talk about biggest moment in fandom. They talk about J.J. Abrams directing Episode IX, they have listener feedback on the J.J. news, they talk about their new Halloween shirts, and then they interview Colin Cantwell. Colin talks about designing the ships and models for Star Wars which is pretty cool. Afterwards Drew and his two daughters Lily and Sophie stop by to talk about BB-8 On the Run.

Star Wars 7×7: Episode 1172 talks about Find the Force and new information it revealed.

Porg Count: 1, Runtime: 10 minutes, Rating: Good episode

Talk Star Wars: Episode 87 starts with some show reviews, then they talk about Bail and his Jedi friend, Obi-Wan, the chosen one, what caused “the awakening”, prophecy, the Barish vow, possible Luke vs Kylo vs Leia scenarios, Mark Hamill comments, Journal of the Whills, Rian Johnson comments on Episode IX, Ron Howard images, Abrams replacing Trevorrow and co-writing Episode IX with Chris Terrio, and the December release date.

Porg Count: 13, Runtime: 2 hours 32 minutes, Rating: Good episode

TechnoRetro Dads: Whether Mouse or Rat, Chuck E Cheese Turns Forty starts with listening and speeding, then they talk Chuck E Cheese a little before heading into pizza jokes and news. There’s a speed rant on J.J. Abrams where they actually play their discussion at a faster speed. I have to say I really didn’t like that. Afterwards it’s back to Chuck E Cheese as they talk about how it got started and they share their memories of the place. For their games discussion, they keep it on topic and talk about the games at Chuck E Cheese.

Porg Count: 11, Runtime: 1 hour 18 minutes, Rating: Good episode

The Deucecast Movie Podcast: Episode 294 features guest Gina Grad as they start with a movie game, then discuss forgotten childhood movies. From The Chipmunk Adventures to The Legend of Billie Jean, they cover a lot of movies you may or may never have heard of.

Porg Count: 0 (Porg Free), Runtime: 1 hour 6 minutes, Rating: Good episode

The Imperial Senate Podcast: Episode XIV features guests Swara Salih and KnightOfEm as they talk about Trevorrow being fired and their thoughts on him and the writer. Note this was before the J.J. Abrams announcement, and there’s some division between the hosts and the guests on Trevorrow as both guests are very critical on Trevorrow. They share their thoughts on alternate directors, diversity, and they end with whether there should be porgs in Episode IX. Little too much negativity from the guests for my liking. I’m not looking for “bash Trevorrow” podcast episodes and there was a bit of that going on here.

Porg Count: 18, Runtime: 1 hour 13 minutes, Rating: Okay episode

The Nerd Room: Episode 87 covers Trevorrow being fired and J.J. Abrams being brought on along with the writer who did Batman v Superman. They share their thoughts on that, some speculation, current events, the move back to December, their Force Friday finds, and some other toy news. About 35 minutes in, they switch gears to the Marvel universe as they talk movie news, Shazaam, Inhumans, phase IV, and whether the Fantastic Four could be brought back in.

Porg Count: 1, Runtime: 1 hour 35 minutes, Rating: Good episode

The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of: Episode 5 is hosted by Stephen and Jessica as they discuss two movies. First up is Pulp Fiction. Now it tore my heart a bit to hear that Stephen didn’t really like it, but at least Jessica did. They talk about what they did and didn’t like, they rehash the plot of the movie, and they share a little bit of trivia. Afterwards there is a trivia game, some quick thoughts on Detroit, then they discuss The French Connection. Neither of them were very enthusiastic about this movie. They talk about the murkiness of Popeye Doyle, the plot and their thoughts on the portrayal of police in the movie. Afterwards is another trivia game. This was my first time listening to the show, and it’ll probably be the last. The audio and the hosts are okay, but there are a lot of movie discussion podcasts out there, and I’m afraid there just isn’t room for this one on my weekly playlist.

Porg Count: 0 (Porg Free), Runtime: 54 minutes, Rating: Okay episode

Toy Run: Episode 77 starts with the director shake up, toy runs, toy news, Toys R Us thinking about bankruptcy, a tutorial for how to use the Force Link, a HASCON report, and DJ’s scars.
