Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
501stCast: Episode 101 goes over the current Legion strength, newly elected leaders, new costumes that are now accepted and the garrison reports. They also have details on the Galactic Academy events and panel info for Star Wars Celebration Orlando as well as trading opportunities at their booth. Good episode.
Blast From the Past (Assembly of Geeks): Uncle Buck focuses on the John Hughes/John Candy comedy Uncle Buck. Scott interviews Jean Louisa Kelly who talks about her time on the movie and what it was like working with John Candy and John Hughes. Scott also talks a little about the attempts at sequels and even the tv show. Interesting episode for those who are fans of the film.
Blast Points: Episode 66 starts with news and then they head into their main discussion which focuses on Order 66. They breakdown what we know and how it all fits together into one narrative, piecing together the bits from the films and the television show. Good episode.
Bombad Radio: Episode 273 covers news items as they talk Rogue One, Battlefront, the new Star Wars visual encyclopedia, movies, costuming, and more. They keep it trained on Star Wars throughout. While there’s good discussions in the episode, the audio quality is a little crummy. There’s a little bit of an echo, some tinniness in one of the audio feeds, and Jeremiah’s audio level was a little low in comparison to Kae’s which made it hard to find a good balance between without it being too loud or too quiet. Keep in mind I listened to the episode in my car, so it might work better with ear buds.
Brews and Blasters: Episode 113 is hosted by Joe and guest co-host Shazbazzar as they talk about the Brews and Blasters meet-up at Star Wars Celebration Orlando, the origin of Shazbazzar’s name, podcasting, forums, fandom, Tron: Uprising, new details on the Han Solo movie, comic solicitations, Star Wars Rebels “Twin Suns,” and need’em got’em. Fun episode.
Disney Vault Talk: Tangled features Steve, Teresa and special co-host Sarah Woloski (Skywalking Through Neverland). They cover the news and other recent topics, then head on in to a full on Tangled discussion complete with trivia and comparisons to Frozen. Which is better? Did this film start the latest Disney film renaissance? They tackle that and more. Fun as always.
Fly Casual: Episode 127 warms up with some random discussions, then they head into news, some Zahn discussion, speculation of Thrawn, toy news, comic news, Celebration, some furries, some yiffing and lots of joking around.
Fly Casual: Episode 129 warms up with some more random chit chat, then they dive into news. They talk Celebration, their plans for a meet-up at the Jedi News booth on Friday, then break off into other news with Frank Oz’s comments, Linda Dern, Bob Iger, Gareth Edwards on Rogue One deleted scenes, new comic solicitations, their comic rankings, The Last Jedi trailer, and toy news. Good episode.
Full of Sith: Episode CCIX features a great discussion with Sam Witwer as Mike, Holly and Bryan talk to him about Star Wars Rebels “Twin Suns.” They talk all things Maul, Sam’s creative process leading up to this moment, and tons of insight into the character. This one is my pick of the week. A must listen.
Hangin’ With Team Kanan: Episode 32 covers Star Wars Rebels “Twin Suns” and their thoughts on what will happen in the season finale.
Hokey Religion: Episode 41 discusses Empire’s End, kinda. On one hand, only one of the two hosts read the book, so the discussion is one sided. On the other hand, they get side tracked and off topic easily and often, which leads to them debating about a question before finally looking it up. This episode really didn’t work for me. While getting off on tangents can be fun, too much can be tiresome.
Less Than 12 Parsecs: Episode 100 celebrates, what else, Tim’s 100th episode.
Radio 1138: Episode 59 kicks off with Mark and James in their car as they recap MCM Comic Con. They have an interview with Jabba sculptor John Coppinger, cantina alien Pam Rose, First Order general Bern Collaco, and artists Matt Busch and Lin Zy. Mark and James also talk about Celebration 2019, Star Wars land, and celebrating the anniversary of the Rebel Legion. Good episode.
Rebel Force Radio: Episode 3.17.2017 covers St. Patrick’s Day and they talk with Sheldon about “When the Galaxy Listens” which has gone from a documentary movie to a series of sorts. They also talk Celebration, the Rebel Force Radio Bash, and they talk with Chris Fawcett about the Collectors Track. I do have to admit, there little segment on the guy who killed his wife over some Star Wars figures was in pretty poor taste.
Rebel Force Radio: Episode 3.24.2017 covers recent news and features a conversation with Sam Witwer covering Star Wars Rebels “Twin Suns.” While a conversation with Sam is usually required listening, Full of Sith’s discussion with Sam was a lot better, and covers a lot of the same ground but in more detail. From the sounds of it, they spoke with Sam before RFR did, so a lot of Sam’s comments in this episode were already discussed elsewhere. However, Jason and Jimmy do get into a lengthy debate with Sam over the whole chosen one prophecy which you won’t get in the Full of Sith episode, though it wasn’t that great of a debate in my opinion as I’m pretty much in Sam’s court with Obi-Wan simply being wrong about who the chosen one is.
Rebel Yell: Twin Suns features Steve, Teresa, Erich and special guest John Jackson Miller as they discuss Star Wars Rebels “Twin Suns.” They breakdown the episode, discuss the chosen one and try to figure out who knows Vader is Anakin. They talk a little Rebels, a little Rogue One, and some thoughts on the season finale (pre-release). Great discussion.
Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode 160 covers the “Join the Resistance” variety show they went to, and their review of Beauty and the Beast complete with clips from the press event they attended featuring comments from the actors. Plus there’s a look back at Bantha Tracks. Good episode with nice coverage of both the variety show, which sounded pretty wild considering all the celebrity guests and events, and of Beauty and the Beast.
Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode 161 starts with some Beauty and the Beast discussion, they play a clip of Ben Burt talking about how he created the sound of a lightsaber, there’s details on the Vudu viewing party for Rogue One, they talk about their Podcasting Stage panel at Star Wars Celebration, and then they have on their first guest, Tyler Westhause, as they go over Star Wars Rebels “Twin Suns.” Afterwards, they have on guests Donald Wicks and Joey Pittman as they continue the “Twin Suns” discussion with info and clips from the special screening which included Sam Witwer and Dave Filoni. Good episode.
Star Wars 7×7: Episode 997 covers the season finale of Star Wars Rebels, “Zero Hour.” Allen goes over the big picture items of what happened, where things are at, and Dave Filoni’s comments on completing Star Wars: The Clone Wars through Star Wars Rebels.
Star Wars 7×7: Episode 998 is a little behind the scenes discussion as Allen talks about how the show is made day in and day out, as well as some of his 2017 plans.
Starships Sabers and Scoundrels: Episode 25 starts with news, a convention rundown, Celebration info, and then they have on guests Joe and Chris from Brews and Blasters for a “to open or not to open” segment. Afterwards, they have on Johnamarie (The Wookiee Gunner) to talk about Star Wars Rebels “Zero Hour.” They bring up a very interesting analogy between the Bendu and Kanan and Luke and the Emperor, plus they share their thoughts on season four. Great discussion.
Talk Star Wars: Episode 62 tackles listener reviews, then dives into listener comms, aka listener questions. They talk about Star Wars Rebels “Twin Suns” and Luke being the chosen one, Obi-Wan’s compassion toward Maul, Stephen Stanton’s Alec Guinness performance, whether The Force Awakens has undermined the chosen one prophecy, what kind of movie Gareth Edwards should do next, Celebration guests, Frank Oz comments, Han Solo details, and other news items. This one is a one hour episode hosted by just Marc and Rob and it’s pretty good. If you haven’t tried Talk Star Wars yet, I highly recommend it. They’re one of my favorite Star Wars discussion podcasts.
TechnoRetro Dads: UNO, You Just Ought to Play These Games People Play begins with some jokes, news, they talk about the new Amazing Stories show, a new Back to the Future collector’s edition book and some cereal discussion. Then they talk games, first with UNO and its variations, then with the video game Joust and its history. Fun show.
The 602 Club: Episode 122 features Matthew, Bruce and special guest Mark Hurliman (Star Wars Beyond the Films) as they discuss Chuck Wendig’s latest Star Wars novel, Empire’s End. Fair warning, there’s a lot of criticism in this episode as they cover all the things that didn’t work for them, and a few of the things that did. That said, it’s fair criticism, and even as someone who liked the book, I enjoyed listening to them discuss it and what they thought of it. It’s an interesting look at the possible weaknesses of the story. Good episode.
Western Reaches: Episode 25 starts out with some Star Wars Rebels discussion on “Twin Suns,” then they go over what they’re reading and playing. They talk a little about Mass Effect: Andromeda though at the recording of this episode, neither of them had played it yet. The main discussion of the show is on Horizon Zero Dawn, which I wasn’t familiar with. If you have played the game, you might want to check this one out.
