Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
Beltway Banthas: Episode 24 starts with current topics and news, then they discuss the Empire and like the bad guys with guests Andrea Letamendi and Tyler Westhause which leads to a very interesting discussion on what it is about the villains that interests us so much. Good episode.
Blast Points: Episode 63 starts with a little The Last Jedi news ala biohexacrypt, and they go over Star Wars Celebration announcements, guests and the UK’s Star Wars Fun Day with Bor Gullet. Then they go into Aftermath: Empire’s End with full spoilers. There’s an interesting take from Gabe on this one as he only read some of Aftermath and none of Life Debt, catching most of the major plot points via online breakdowns. Jason, on the other hand, read all three. They talk about Palpatine’s Plan B, a possible mention of Captain Phasma which I missed on my read through of the book, the Church of the Force interlude, Chewbacca’s interlude, Lando’s interlude, and going back to Jakku. They don’t spoil the entire book as they mostly touch on the interludes and even then, they don’t go into too much detail, so you could listen to this entire episode and still find lots of surprises in the book. They made a good observation about how having the recognizable film characters in such small roles, and the new characters in such large roles, can actually be a negative when the film characters are the more interesting ones. Overall, fantastic episode. Both informative and entertaining.
Brews and Blasters: Episode 110 kicks off with Blue Russians as they talk about Conty’s toy find, Twinkie ice cream, Mandalorian windows, the Auralnauts R2 video, Jedi cologne, Oppo molting, listener feedback, some need’em got’em, and more. Fun as always, but I think the Blue Russians and Oppo’s molting makes this one special.
Comic Book Noob: X-23 covers the female Wolverine as seen in the new movie Logan. They talk about her comic run, her origins, the differences between her and Wolverine, what she went through as a child, and their recommended reading. Note this was recorded before any of them had seen the movie. Very informative. I listened to it after seeing Logan and really enjoyed hearing more about the character.
Full of Sith: Episode CCV is hosted by the full crew as they talk about what planet Mike would live on in Star Wars and the image on the new toy packaging and what it might mean. They talk about how far ahead The Last Jedi is in production. Then they talk about their main topic, Star Wars Rebels “The Legacy of Mandalore” episode, plus some listener feedback. Good episode.
Full of Sith: Episode CCVI is fully devoted to Jar Jar. They talk about the characters history, their thoughts on him, and his latest appearance in Aftermath: Empire’s End. No Jar Jar hating here. This one is for the fans. Good episode.
Disney Vault Talk: Bolt starts with news and current events, they go through all of the Disney movies coming out this year, touch on new trailers, and then cover the movie Bolt. Fun episode as always, even if you haven’t seen the movies. Bolt sounds pretty good, so someday I’ll have to check it out.
Galactic Fashion: Episode 21 starts with recent items they’ve gotten, Johnamarie talks a little about cosplay, they cover fashion news, pre-orders, and they interview Catherine Elhoffer. They talk Rogue One fan service, issues she had with the movie, Rogue One fashion, new items and designs.
Great Big Beautiful Podcast: Episode 118 features guest co-host Shiri Sondheimer. They chit chat with Shiri a little bit before getting to the interview which starts 15 minutes into the show. The interview is with authors Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham, aka James S.A. Corey. They talk about their sci-fi book series and television show The Expanse, how they split up writing duties, hwo they work together, using pseudonyms, how the idea of the series came about, and they get into the details of how they balance the tv show and the books. They talk about the Belters and creating their culture, their language, and their inspiration. They talk about fighting for diversity in the show, casting, why they write and more. Outstanding episode for fans of the book series or the show.
Hokey Religion: Episode 39 covers a little Aftermath: Empire’s End, Inferno Squad, Rogue One Blu-ray, Han Solo news, they get a little hung up on Woody Harrelson’s face, and they go off on a tangent with Billy Zane as they try to remember Cad Bane’s name. They also ponder the significance of The Last Jedi being plural, and dive into a Hobbit discussion. A little Star Wars and some crazy sidesteps puts Hokey Religion in their own category of entertaining discussion.
Lattes With Leia: Episode 14 they go over the new Galactic Maps book, then dig into their main topic, the Jedi. Specifically, they zero in on the Jedi code, whether it’s healthy or not and the pros and cons. They also touch on The Last Jedi and whether Luke with train Rey to be something other than a Jedi. I rather like Andrea’s comments about how by not integrating negative emotions into your entity you hamper your ability to overcome them. Interesting discussion.
Less Than 12 Parsecs: Episode 84 is listener submitted questions which leads to some fun topics. Good episode.
Less Than 12 Parsecs: Episode 85 is a roundup of the headlines including a confirmation on the next season of Star Wars Rebels, new excerpt for Thrawn, new Darth Vader coloring book, Han Solo casting news, fan videos, Oscars and Star Wars Rivals. If you’re short on time and looking to catch up on Star Wars news, great place to turn to.
Less Than 12 Parsecs: Episode 86 features guest Rob Williams from the Generation X-Wing podcast as he talks about the podcast and the Commonwealth. Good episode.
Less Than 12 Parsecs: Episode 87 again features Rob, this time for the 10 silly Star Wars questions which is always fun.
Rebel Force Radio: Star Wars Rebels Declassified S3E17 is hosted by Jimmy and Kyle as they go over Star Wars Rebels “Through Imperial Eyes.” They talk about the idea of doing the entire episode from Kallus’ pov, Thrawn, Lt. List, the items in Thrawn’s office, and the slightly complicated method of Ezra’s mission. They touch on Sabine a little and “Legacy of Mandalore”, and Kyle talks a little about Smuggler’s Revenge.
Rock Out Loud: The First Ever Definitive ROL List – Best Vocalists starts with mini chat on songs that are person’s names, then they get to their definitive top five best rock vocalists. Now this is a bold, touchy subject to venture as everyone is sure to have their own opinions. I know mine didn’t match up with their list, but it was still a lot of fun to hear who their picks were, their reasons, and some hints at the behind the scenes drama as they tried to pick just five. Good episode.
Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode 157 starts out with Disneyland’s Beauty and the Beast Experience, and part one of the survival guide for Star Wars Celebration. They have on gust Matt Clifton to talk about Celebration tips, and Michael and John join them as they talk about getting ready for their first Star Wars Celebration. Fun episode and a good one for those looking for tips on Celebration planning.
Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode 158 starts with Rich and Sarah going over their Star Wars Celebration experiences, then they talk with DJ Elliot about his awesome Celebration moments and some of the things we can look forward to in Orlando. They they have on Patty Hammond who covers what to do for families who will be bringing kids to Celebration. Great tips for parents. Afterwards they’re joined by Tyler Westhause who talks about the Drowning in Moonlight event. Great episode overall. They cover both tips and what will be happening at Celebration.
Star Wars Bookworms: Episode 70 covers some current events and news as they catch up from the last episode, then they get into the Chewbacca comic mini-series. Good episode.
Steven and Stephen on Steven: Saving Private Ryan starts out with the recent movies they’ve seen and the Oscars. Then they dive into Saving Private Ryan, the familiar actors, the opening scene, and why the movie is so great. Good episode with tons of movie discussion.
Talk Star Wars: Episode 60 covers Emilia Clarke joining the cast of Han Solo, the possibility of Palpatine seeing a future where Luke beat him, mothers in Star Wars, whether Kylo hesitated to kill, Luke’s look, Star Wars Celebration news, new Hasbro 6-inch figures, Celebration key art, Inferno Squad, Rogue One Blu-ray, The Last Jedi being plural, IMAX scenes, the May release for the Han Solo film and the cast photo. Great variety of discussions.
The Sandcrawler: Episode 18 features guest Joe Tavano as they dare to take off Ketwol’s pants. They also talk with Joe about his Star Wars fandom, his collection, and they get into Celebration and toys. Fun episode.
TSW Round Table (Talk Star Wars): Episode 002 features Ash from Skyhoppers Podcast, Kyle from TumblingSaber, and listeners Nathan and Carlos as they discuss the poor aim of stormtroopers, Greedo shot first, smoke meat, Leia the Jedi, Leia beyond The Last Jedi and more. Great discussions and a pretty awesome concept for a podcast. It’s hosted by Robert Cast with a rotating assembly of hosts that is a mix of podcasters and listeners. It takes listener involvement with a podcast to a whole new level as fans are able to interact with the hosts on the show. Definitely a podcast to keep an eye on and to stay tuned to.
