Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
Blabba the Hutt: Episode 30 starts pre-Rogue One and without Kate as they talk in the pub before the movie, then it cuts to Jamie in the car on the ride home as he provides his reactions after having seen it twice. Spoiler free.
Blast Points: Episode 53 is their pre-Rogue One episode as they talk Beezer Fortuna, Wheezer, 8 foot tall Snoke puppet, the Rogue One red carpet premiere, Crystal Skull, Rogue One plans, and they ponder how intelligent the wampa on Hoth was. Nice episode with no spoilers.
Blast Points: Episode 54 kicks off with the jokes as they begin their Rogue One episode and the Star Wars love. They touch on the idea of Rogue One being the core of a new trilogy bookended by Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, they talk about how the film reflects the aesthetic shifts as it goes from a ROTS feel to ANH feel by the end of the film, they cover the music, a lot of scene-by-scene discussion, the locations, the characters, Vader becoming Dracula and much more. Lots of humor and lots of fun make this the best Rogue One discussion I’ve listened to so far. I making this one my pick of the week.
Bombad Radio: Episode 263 features an excellent interview with author William C. Dietz. Bill talks about tie-in work, working with video games, the politics of dealing with other creators, writing his own series, how his first book came about, his military background, Mass Effect, Star Wars, Resistance and more. Great one to check out as Bill has a lot of great stories.
Brews and Blasters: Episode 99 is a pre-Rogue One show as they go through emails which leads to food and Star Wars discussions, they cover five things they’re looking forward to in Rogue One, the appearance of the Ghost in Rogue One, their speculation on the characters, a little Wedge trash talk, a review of the latest Star Wars Rebels episode, need’em got’em and some toy ripping action. Fun episode.
Coffee With Kenobi: Episode #61 is a pre/post Rogue One show. The first 46 minutes is them hanging out before the Rogue One showing at the Peoria Riverfront Museum. You’ll probably want to skip right to their Rogue One discussion which starts at the 47 minute mark. They try to keep their discussion spoiler free and focus on the themes and characters, so there’s nothing too spoilery.
Databank Brawl: Episode 24 puts Kitster up against three Jawas. Who will win? It’s an interesting matchup as they ponder on where Kitser would be in his teenage years, how he would fare in a fight, and what’s under the Jawa’s robes.
Fangirls Going Rogue: Episode 39 starts with their New York Times appearance, news, Force for Fashion, they discuss Amelia Clarke’s casting in Han Solo, diversity, Rogue One expectations, thoughts on the future of films and Kathleen Kennedy’s comments, and Michael Giacchino doing Rogue One in four weeks. Then they get into some detail on what was known about the Rogue One characters prior to the movie’s release. There’s an interview with Hannah Gillis of ILMxLab, and a character discussion for Hondo. Lot of good stuff in this episode.
Fangirls Going Rogue: Priority Transmission #3 is their Rogue One episode as they get into some critical analysis of what didn’t work, they head into what they loved. They cover advice for parents who are on the fence on whether to bring their kids, early box office results, and more. Does include spoilers.
Fly Casual: Episode 117 is a pre-Rogue One show as they talk about their movie plans, there’s the Porkin’s bite of the week, a fun review of Han Solo #5, they also review Star Wars #25, Star Wars Annual #2, and Star Wars Rebels reviews for “Iron Squadron” and “The Wynkahthu Job.” Afterwards they get into Catalyst, and wrap things up with rumors.
ForceCenter: Episode 43 starts with their overall thoughts on Rogue One, then they dive into the themes that jumped out at them, the things they loved, the things they didn’t like, what they would have liked to have seen, and questions the movie answered. Really good episode and one of the better Rogue One discussions I listened to. I’d rate them right behind Blast Points. They do delve into spoilers.
Full of Sith: Episode CXCV is some audio from a panel Bryan hosted that featured some of the creators from Fantasy Flight Games, Star Wars author Timothy Zahn and Star Wars comic writer Mark Waid as they all talk Star Wars then and now. They cover comic writing, writing for Destiny and writing novels. Mark even mentions that the door is open at Marvel for him to return to Star Wars. It’s a good panel with some really nice audio and fun discussions. No Rogue One spoilers here.
Full of Sith: Episode CXCVII is the good stuff as they get into Rogue One details and spoilers with Mike, Bryan, Amy and Bobby. Amidst all the good conversation, Bryan made one observation that really stood out to me and that’s regarding the irony of Krennic knowing what he knows and the way the battle ends. This also marks Amy’s last episode as a regular host.
Radio 1138: Episode 55 begins with some quick thoughts on Rogue One that avoids any spoilery details, then they play a bunch of mini-interviews they did with the members of Rogue One including Kathleen Kennedy, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna and Donnie Yen. Very spoiler lite, but the interviews are fun.
Rebel Force Radio: Rogue One Review #1 features Jason, Jimmy, Kyle Newman and Paul Bateman. Before they get into their spoiler filled Rogue One discussion, Jason and Jimmy start off the episode with an apology to reporter Erin Whitney who they had some harsh criticism of in the previous episode. Once that is out of the way, they dive into their round table. Good discussion.
Rebel Yell: Imperial Super Commandos features Steve, Erich and Star Wars author Adam Bray as they start off talking with Adam about his travels and some fun stories. Then they review the episode from Star Wars Rebels. Good episode.
Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode 148 is part one of their Rogue One discussion as they talk with Anthony Breznican about the PG-13 rating and the message of sacrifice, as well as the characters. They also talk with Donald Wicks who was able to attend the Rogue One world premiere. This one doesn’t really have any spoilers as it was before Sarah and Rich saw the movie.
Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode 149 is part two of their Rogue One discussion and this time they get into spoilers. The show starts off pre-Rogue One as they were recording live from the TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX, then about 10 minutes in they cut to afterwards with their thoughts and those of their fellow fans and guests. Nice discussion with lots of viewpoints.
Star Wars 7×7: Episode 899 tackles Vader and whether he is one of cinema’s greatest villains of all time, if it’s style over substance, and whether Rogue One changes that.
Star Wars Report: Episode 253 is their Rogue One episode as Riley, Bethan, Mark and Bruce talk about the movie, get into spoilers and provide a very positive and enthusiastic discussion.
Starships Sabers and Scoundrels: Episode 17 covers Black Friday, news, buying Rogue One tickets, a Galactic Empire update, they have on a guest from George Shot First, they talk cosplay, gift ideas, they have on guest James Wupee (probably spelled wrong, forgive me) who talks designs, they review Star Wars Rebels “An Inside Man”, and they cover emails. Good episode.
Starships Sabers and Scoundrels: Episode 18 begins with Vader Claus, they speed through the news, touch on Skystalking for 2017, then zoom into their Rogue One thoughts complete with spoilers. They talk about the music, favorite moments, the gray side of the Rebels, scenes they liked, Saw coming to Star Wars Rebels, his portrayal in the movie, Admiral Raddus, Krennic and Vader. Nice little discussion. Afterwards there is some audio Taxus captured following his viewing of Rogue One with fellow fans sharing their initial thoughts. Plus there’s a very funny Jedi robe gift commerical they do. Fun episode.
Sylvie Awesome Podcast: Episode 1 debuts a brand new podcast from Sylvie Kent, the daughter of Beltway Bantha’s Stephen Kent. The episode starts off with Christmas, Star Wars and awesome. Suffice to say this one is really fun. Stephen cohosts as they talk about gift giving, looking forward to Rogue One, how the Empire was created, the meaning of respect and more. The topics vary and they fit it all into a nice 17 minute short format show which makes it easy to squeeze into your podcast listening. With good sound quality, it’s a fun listen.
Talk Star Wars: Episode SW0608 dives into Rogue One and spoilers as they discuss their initial reactions, emotional reactions, likes and dislikes and the CGI. Very nice discussion and definitely one to add to your playlist if you’re diving into Rogue One episodes.
The Cantina Cast: Episode 155 is hosted by Mike and Joao as they talk about their Rogue One experiences and dive into spoilers. They cover the things they liked, the things they had issues with, the things they didn’t have issues with, and their favorite moments. It’s an episode with good audio quality and some thorough discussions so if you’re looking for more Rogue One episodes you might want to check this one out.
