Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
Assembly of Geeks: Star Trek Beyond and The Killing Joke starts with their thoughts on Star Trek Beyond, then they talk about the Justice League trailer, the Wonder Woman trailer, and Matt Moore joins them to talk about The Killing Joke. Good episode.
Awards Chatter: Bob Odenkirk interview is top notch and a must listen for Better Call Saul or Breaking Bad fans. Bob talks about where he grew up, getting into comedy, his work as a writer, transitioning to acting, and how he wound up on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
Brews and Blasters: Episode 82 features Joe and Chris as they talk Star Wars and action figures while listening to both of the Bill and Ted soundtracks. Fun as always but the musical change-up does provide some variety and some musical side road discussions.
Comic Book Noob: Suicide Squad Part 2 is the second half of their Suicide Squad coverage as they talk about Rick Flag, Killer Croc, Slipknot, Enchantress and Captain Boomerang. Combined with Part 1, this is essential listening prior to seeing the movie as it helped me a lot as I wasn’t familiar with any of the characters aside from Harley Quinn. If you check out both part 1 and part 2, you’ll have a much better feel for the characters.
Comics With Kenobi: Issue #21 discusses the Thrawn novel, then bounces into comic reviews of Poe Dameron #4, The Force Awakens #2, Han Solo #2, Darth Vader #23 and Star Wars #21. Fun episode as always and a great place to get your Star Wars comic book fix.
Databank Brawl: Episode 15 pits Jocasta Nu against Yaddle for a rumble in the library and answer to why the female version of Yoda disappeared after The Phantom Menace.
Fly Casual: Episode 100 starts out with a lot of love for Thrawn as they rejoice in his return. Then they touch on some of the other Star Wars Rebels stuff, and do get into toys with the Black Series 6-inch news, new helmets and more. Good episode.
ForceCenter: Episode 23 discusses Life Debt in detail and with lots of spoilers. Good episode for those who have already read the book.
Full of Sith: Episode CLXXVIII starts with some news, then they get into a full on Life Debt discussion which is kind of interesting in that I think Bryan was the only one who read the whole book. Either way, they delve into spoilers as they talk about the interludes, the shadow council and lots of random highlights. If you’re on the fence about the book and don’t mind a few spoilers, this might be a good episode to check out for some motivation. They don’t go into a full breakdown of the plot, so if you listen to this one and then go read the book, there will still be plenty of surprises.
Geek Out Loud: Episode 189 features Steve and Erich. Erich starts at talking a little about SDCC, they talk about the Justice League, Wonder Woman and Kong: Skull Island trailers, and even a little pokemon. Then they get into “Pass the Corn” for August covering Nine Lives, Suicide Squad, Sausage Party, Pete’s Dragon, Ben-Hur, War Dogs, Hell or Highwater, Blood Father, Hands of Stone, and movie anniversaries like Heavy Metal, American Werewolf in London, Howard the Duck, Stand By Me, The Fly, Transformers the Movie, Tin Cup, The Island of Dr. Moreau, documentaries and Stranger Things. Fun episode. They touch on a lot of movies, sharing their opinions, and Steve saw Suicide Squad so they were able to go a little deeper into that one without any spoilers.
Jedi Journals: August 2016 episode includes some stories from Chris about SWCE, they go over the usual lit news and upcoming releases, do some Star Wars mad libs, and talk Bloodline (spoiler discussion).
Radio 1138: Episode 49 covers a lot of ground as usual. There’s some rough audio from London Film and Comic Con I believe, then they cut back to some normal audio as they talk a little SWCE, then switch over to a chat with Jeremy Bulloch, Dave Prowse, audio of the Dave Filoni SWCE press interview, some Warwick Davis audio, an interview with a model maker, and some more audio of Warwick Davis from a panel he did at London Film and Comic Con. Interesting stuff, some you may have heard like the Dave Filoni audio, but all the London Film and Comic Con stuff is new as I haven’t heard any other podcast who has covered that. It’s a lot of different recordings so some are better than others.
Rebel Force Radio: Episode 8.5.2016 starts out with a Stranger Things discussion, then they get into news, Mark Hamill’s latest statements on Episode VIII, some salt in the wound from the Friends of the Park people, and they poke fun at Life Debt.
Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode 131 starts out with guests Shazbazzar and Jedishua from TechnoRetro Dads as they talk Howard the Duck with Rich and Sarah. Afterwards Rich and Mark review Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens as they go over the Star Wars references, talk a bit about the series as a whole, and touch on the weaknesses of this fourth sequel. Fun episode.
Star Wars 7×7: Episode 746 features a short interview with Star Wars illustrator Kemp Remillard who does the cross-sections. One interesting thing about this interview is Kemp confirmed he did some cross-sections for Rogue One in the Ultimate Visual Guide.
Star Wars 7×7: Episode 754 features a short interview with Star Wars author Jason Fry.
Star Wars 7×7: Episode 755 features a short interview with Star Wars comic editor Jordan White.
Star Wars 7×7: Episode 762 features a short interview with Star Wars author Adam Bray. All of these interviews are very short, around 3 or 4 minutes, so it’s worth binge listening to them all at once. There’s more interviews out there if you’re interested, just check their feed. I typically zero in on the authors and artists.
Star Wars New Canon Book Club: Episode 11 reviews the Chewbacca comic mini-series and the Nar Shaddaa arc of the main Star Wars comic series. As usual, there’s some humor. Great observation on Dengar being Marv from Sin City. If you’re looking for more Star Wars lit coverage, they’re worth checking out. Fair warning: there are spoilers and some occasional language.
Star Wars Oxygen: Volume 32 is the audio from Dave’s panel at SWCE for the restored music of The Empire Strikes Back.
Talk Star Wars: Episode 35 covers a little news, some announcements, then they dig into listener questions and some great Star Wars discussions. They talk about R2-D2 and the map to Skywalker, lightsabers and crystals, Jedi and prophecy, Rogue One and time placement, the sequel trilogy, Rey and the dark side, and much more. In general, I just love listening to these guys talk Star Wars as it always seems to lead to fascinating conversations. Definitely give this podcast a listen.
