Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
Aggressive Negotiations: Issue 022 covers Star Wars video games as they talk about their favorites and least favorites, from Super Star Wars to The Force Unleashed II.
Blast Points: Episode 31 features guest Ryan Porter. They start off talking a little about Aftermath by Chuck Wendig, then work their way to Life Debt. Lot of good observations and some fun discussion, but it’s only a half hour long. I could have definitely listened to them for a full hour. Great show regardless.
Blast Points: Episode 32 features Dunc from Club Jade. They talk about the early days of online fandom, Dunc talks about how she got into the books, fanfic and zines, and they talk about Star Wars fandom in general. It’s a fun episode.
Brews and Blasters: Episode 81 features guest Mike Audette as he joins Joe to talk about SDCC, meeting Chuck Wendig, going to the Hasbro panel and they get into an in-depth discussion on Aftermath: Life Debt which is pretty good. Good episode overall.
Children of the Force: Special Edition is hosted by Liam and his friend Noah, so with the kids running the show, anything goes. They talk about a bunch of stuff in just 20 something minutes. From favorite moments to Snoke and Space Monkey. Kinda fun and chaotic.
Disney Vault Talk: The Emperor’s New Groove starts out with mail, they catch up a little, and then dive deep into news. There’s a lot of news. At 48 minutes in, they get to The Emperor’s New Groove. Fun episode.
Fangirls Going Rogue: Episode #35 begins with Tricia’s trip to Disneyland Paris and some of the goodies she picked up. Then they talk LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures, Johnamarie joins them to talk SDCC, Tricia talks about her Star Wars VR experience, SWCE, and she touches a little on diversity. They talk about the Jaina Solo Hasbro fan choice figure, and their character discussion focuses on Thrawn. Good episode.
Fly Casual: Episode 99 kicks off with reviews for Poe Dameron #4 and Han Solo #3. Then they get into Star Wars Rebels Season 3 news and speculation. Good episode.
Full of Sith: Episode CLXXVII is hosted by Mike, Bryan and Bobby! They talk SWCE, Thrawn, the Rogue One panel, the Vader teaser, compare it to other Celebrations, plus they talk some Episode VIII and more. Great episode with some fun conversation.
Galactic Fashion: Episode 14 covers new items that are out, the Loot Crate fangirl offering, and they have audio of the SDCC fashion panel which included Ashley Eckstein. They also cover the history of the pea coat and blazer, as well as Ezra’s hair and whether there will be a season four of Star Wars Rebels.
Geek Out Loud: Episode 187 Steve talks about what he’s been up to, listener emails, SDCC news, Ghostrider, Thor: Ragnarok, the Vulture, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, the Wonder Woman trailer, the Justice League trailer, and then he gets into Stranger Things. Fun episode.
Great Big Beautiful Podcast: Unplugged 10 is a full account of Jamie’s trip to SDCC, his experiences there, the people he met, and the panels and events he went to. Pretty fun way to get an idea of what it was like.
Ion Cannon: Episode #59 starts with a little SWCE discussion before they head into Life Debt. There’s a lot of criticism for the story, but there’s also some praise. It’s an okay episode overall, so if you’re looking for Life Debt discussion you might want to consider this one.
Rebel Force Radio: Episode 7.29.2016 features guest East Side Dave as they talk Star Wars, share stories, touch on Dave Filoni, Aljon shares a George Lucas story, then they tackle news including the Han Solo trilogy rumor, Episode VIII, and Conan’s Star Wars auditions for Han Solo.
Rock Out Loud: Rock From Across the Pond starts with Kristin’s recap of her trip to Europe, then they go into great bands from the UK such as The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, T. Rex, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, Duran Duran and Def Leppard. Great episode as always.
Rogue Won: Episode 13 is a bit a of a long podcast at two hours. This was also my first time checking out the podcast. I believe it’s normally hosted by three guys, but one of them was absent for this episode. Having recently finished Life Debt, I was looking for some podcast episodes on the book, and this one advertised a discussion for it. Unfortunately I didn’t make it that far as I eventually gave up after 30 minutes. It just wasn’t a podcast for me. It’s uncensored and there’s a lot of language, which is a deal breaker for me, but they used it in a way that hurt the conversation. They started out talking about some internal stuff, moved on to news and emails, and later on in the episode would have been the Life Debt discussion. It’s always a bummer when a podcast doesn’t work out for the listener, but some people out there might like it so you might want to give it a try.
Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode #130 begins with Rich’s thoughts on having started watching Firefly, then they talk at length with Kevin Reitzel about SWCE. He talks about being at the Mark Hamill panel and asking the first question, as well what his experience was like at the con. They share another Skywalker story, then Kai Charles joins them to talk SDCC. Good episode.
Starships Sabers and Scoundrels: Episode 8 has a Chewie intro, then they get into news, Deep Breath returns, they have a Life Debt discussion, and they talk about the characters they’d like to see in Star Wars Rebels. Fun episode.
Star Wars 7×7: Episode 739 is interesting as it’s a daily Star Wars podcast. This episode is 13 minutes long and focuses on Life Debt. There are no spoilers, but there’s still some good discussion. I liked their observation of how everyone in the book has their own life debt. Worth a listen.
Star Wars Action News: Episode 481 is their SDCC coverage. They talk about the FX Collectibles Star Destroyer, Hot Toys, ARTFX, Hasbro, prop replicas and more. Great episode for Star Wars collecting news.
Star Wars Bookworms: Episode #59 starts with the book news out of SWCE and SDCC. They talk a little Thrawn, touch on the LEGO Star Wars: Chronicles of the Force book, then give a full review of the comic Shattered Empire. There’s mixed opinions on the comic as Teresa didn’t like it, but Aaron did. Fun discussion.
Star Wars Influences: Episode 18 features an interesting conversation between Paul Bateman, Kyle Newman and Roger Christian as they talk Star Wars, Alien and film making. The audio is a little rough, but it’s still listenable.
Star Wars Report: Episode #232 is kind of an odd one as it opens with Riley solo hosting as he talk about his SWCE experience. Then 30 minutes in, things switch over to Mark, Tom, Mike and Nathan as they talk SWCE from the couch as they cover the news and content they saw over the livestream.
Star Wars Report: Episode #233 is hosted by Riley, Mark, Bruce and Scott Ryfun as they talk SWCE, the livestream coverage, news, Bistan, Ehrenreich’s three movie deal, books and more. Pretty good episode.
Talk Star Wars: Episode 34 discusses the potential time frames for Rogue One. They talk about the look of Saw, Jyn’s mom, Rey and the lightsaber crystal, and the Church of the Force. They answer listener questions, talk about Rey and the dark side, opening scenes, the new Rogue One character revealed at SDCC, there being no Han Solo cameo and no Hayden Christensen in Rogue One, and Ehrenreich’s three movie deal. Some excellent discussion. Definitely worth a listen.
The Cantina Cast: Episode #137 is a solo episode with Mike. I’ve only listened to a couple episodes of The Cantina Cast so it’s possible that’s normal. Either way, Mike covers SWCE and SDCC news, he talks about the crawl and Rogue One, he covers the Jiang spoiler, and gives a pretty thorough breakdown of everything. If you haven’t jumped into any SWCE coverage yet, this episode would get you covered, and it’s got good audio. If you have watched all the panels from the livestream, though, you’ll probably want to skip this one.
TSW After Darkside: Episode 16 is…different. It’s the Talk Star Wars guys uncensored and off script as they do a bonus after show. This one took about 14 minutes to get started, then they started talking Ghostbusters. They talk about it having more issues than not, but still being worth a watch. They toss around their own alternate idea for a Ghostbusters sequel, they cover Sony’s handling of the trailer, which leads to some discussion of canon for both this franchise and Star Wars. Once the Ghostbusters discussion kicks in, it’s pretty good with some excellent observations.
