Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
501stCast: Episode 96 covers new outfits, troop reports, and Star Wars Celebration Europe including what garrisons will be there, 501st events, and con tips for 501st members.
Assembly of Geeks: Remaking Raiders and Games From E3 2016 starts with a discussion on the Raiders documentary. Then Scott talks with the creators of the fan film. Afterwards they cover news and then they have some guests on to talk E3. Good episode.
Assembly of Geeks: Hollywood Harry Potter & Regulated Star Trek starts with a funny Barney intro, then Emily talks about her trip to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. They cover news items for The Flash, Muppets, SuperCon and more. Then they touch on the Star Trek fan show which was killed by NBC and the Star Trek fan film ban that has resulted. Plus Scott give a quick review of Independence Day 2. Another great episode.
Awards Chatter: Richard Dreyfuss episode features a great conversation with the actor. Richard shares some stories about Jaws and Robert Shaw, he has a funny Star Wars story, he talks about working with George Lucas and American Graffiti, working with Spielberg, and campaigning to be in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Definitely worth listening to.
Awards Chatter: Charles Lipton episode features an excellent conversation with the host of Inside the Actors Studio. Charles talks about his acting career, his fear of becoming a writer and how it ended up happening, and how The Actors Studio came about. If you’ve watched the show, you’ll definitely want to listen to this episode. He has some great stories.
Beltway Banthas: Episode VII starts with some funny Emperor Palpatine/Trump quotes, then they go over some quick Rogue One news. Their main discussion is on democracy, both in Star Wars and the real world. They have on guest David Barnes the policy director at Generation Opportunity to join them for the topic. Now this is my first time tuning into this podcast and I was really impressed. They’ve got good audio quality overall, the two hosts present great discussion, and the Star Wars political angle of the podcast is very unique and interesting. I highly recommend checking them out.
Blabba the Hutt: Smart Queuing at Star Wars Celebration Europe is a special episode. It’s hosted by just Jamie as Kate was on her way to Skellig Michael, and it’s shorter than normal. Jamie talks about Star Wars Celebration Europe, con tips and gives the lowdown on the wristbanding and ticketing that will be going on at the con. Good episode for those heading there.
Blast Points: Episode 28 starts with news, Episode VIII almost done filming, James Cameron’s comments and Ian McCaig comments. Then they get into their main topic, Star Wars Read Along Adventure records. They go over Planet of the Hoojibs, Droid World and Rebel Mission to Ord Mantel with audio clips and lots of fun discussion. Great episode.
BNN: Episode 7.4.2016 covers the top ten news items for this week such as Malfoy coming to season 3 of The Flash, Game of Thrones season news, Star Trek marathons, the Wreck It Ralph sequel, plus Blizzard and Warcraft news. Great podcast to listen to if you want to stay on top of things. It’s a shorter format so it doesn’t eat up too much of your time.
Bombad Radio: The Spirit of Star Wars Part 5 covers Guardians of the Galaxy. This one is a fun episode as everyone liked the film. They talk about the similarities to Star Wars, the director’s comments on this being his Star Wars, comparing Groot and Chewbacca, the villains to Darth Vader and Palpatine, and more.
Bombad Radio: The Spirit of Star Wars Part 6 covers James Cameron’s Avatar. They talk about Cameron’s comments on wanting this to be his Star Wars, they talk about the box office numbers, the fan hype, the sequels, the music, the similarities to Star Wars and the vast differences. There’s some harsh commentary on the film which kind of leads the discussion astray a bit. Not my favorite episode of this series, but you might want to check it out.
Brews and Blasters: Episode 78 starts with a drinking story as they went out with the wives and ran into Gary Busey. They also talk Star Wars and rundown the need’em got’em. Entertaining episode and always worth a listen.
Children of the Force: Episode 40 kicks off with what’s going on, they talk about playing the LEGO The Force Awakens demo, they share some thoughts on Rey’s Story, and then they’re joined by Nick from London. Can I just say Nick was the best guest ever? They talk with Nick about Star Wars Celebration Europe and Rogue One. Afterwards they cover E3 news, Indy 5, an interesting piece of Rey info, the Rey staff replica prop, have some fun with the Chewbacca mask, and more. Fun episode.
Children of the Force: Episode 41 includes some discussion of the new Battlefront DLC as they’ve started playing it, then they spend a bunch of time covering Rogue One, the pictures, and the info EW reported on the characters. Good episode.
Coffee With Kenobi: Episode #55 has some excellent coverage of the Rogue One news as they go over EW’s coverage of the characters. They also cover news, Battlefront DLC, and they have Amy Ratcliffe on to talk Star Wars and Celebration Europe.
Comic Book Noob: Spider-Gwen, aka Spider Woman, covers the origin of Gwen Stacy on the Earth 365, how she becomes the hero instead of Peter Parker, her comic history, her personality, and recommended reading order. It’s a great episode as always, but this one was interesting to me as I’ve never read a comic with Spider-Gwen but I have seen the character and always wondered who she was. Now I know, and that’s the great thing about Comic Book Noob. It informs comic book fans and helps us noobs get educated.
Comics With Kenobi: Issue #20 reviews Poe Dameron #3, Han Solo #1, The Force Awakens #1 adaptation, Star Wars #20, Darth Vader #21 and #22. Interesting mixture of opinions on these issues. There’s some dislike of the Godzilla elements in Poe Dameron and some love for Poe’s dialog, praise for Han Solo #1, some dislike of the artwork and the safe storytelling with the TFA adaptation, which I have to agree with Jeff on completely. If you’re going to do an adaptation, either the artwork needs to be gorgeous or the story has to tell some new stuff. Lots of praise for the artwork in Star Wars #20 which is richly deserved. Mike Mayhew’s work there was outstanding. They also sneak in an interview with Tom Akel who helped get the Korean Star Wars web comic translated into english. Good episode.
Dune Cast: Episode #2 starts with listener feedback, some suggestions for good online sources for Dune, then they dig into Dune Messiah, the second book in the series. They go over the key events, the characters, new elements and ways this book expands the Dune universe. Good episode.
Fangirls Going Rogue: Episode 44 starts with Teresa talking about the RFR meetup and Steve Glosson’s loop, then they talk ABC-3PO. Tricia talks about her trip to Hungary. They talk Rogue One and share their thoughts. They have one guests Sophia and Chaney as they talk TCW, Rebels, representation and the emotional impact of Star Wars. Then they cover Han Solo for their character discussion and talk a little Star Wars Celebration Europe. Fun episode.
Full of Sith: Episode CLXXIII starts with Bryan debunking the supposed Disney ban on the prequels. Then they talk Star Wars Celebration past and present, Star Wars Rebels, Disneyland Paris and more.
Great Big Beautiful Podcast: Episode 71 features Leland Chee. They talk with Leland about his career with Lucasfilm, and his involvement with the new show LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures. Then they talk with Bill Motz and Bob Roth, the executive producers and show runners for The Freemaker Adventures.
Lattes With Leia: Episode #6 starts with some tea and coffee supplement chit chat along with whether Qui-Gon would have a fling if he was left in the desert like Obi-Wan. Then they head into their main discussion tackling the big topics that general Star Wars fans have: did Jar Jar ruin Star Wars or was it the midichlorians? Who shot first? Do Ewoks suck? Is the metal bikini okay? And the all important viewing order of the saga. Fun episode.
Rebel Force Radio: Episode 7.1.2016 starts off with the sad news that the Lucas museum will not be heading to Chicago now. Jimmy gives the full rundown on what happened and way, and shares his disappointment. Then they do “slow and tell,” cover the recent Star Wars comments by James Cameron and Ian McCaig, talk a little about J.W. Rinzler and the making of book, and then they head into a great conversation with EW’s Anthony Breznican who talks about Rogue One. They wrap things up with Kyle Newman as they talk about the Raiders documentary and fan film.
Rebels Chat: Episode 47 covers Star Wars: The Clone Wars episodes 19 through 22. They share their thoughts on the episodes, Johnamarie reveals she doesn’t like Thrawn, and they have some funny dinosaur jokes.
Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode #127 covers the announcement of Wreck It Ralph 2. Then they do Skywalker stories, Teresa comes on to talk about Disney’s Animal Kingdom and their recent changes, plus her character experience with Kylo Ren. Good episode.
Star Wars New Canon Book Club: Episode 9 covers Bloodline by Claudia Gray. They talk about various plot points in the book, the characters, and their overall enjoyment of the novel. While it is a spoiler discussion, there’s so much in the book that there’s a lot they don’t touch on so you could still listen to this episode and not be completely spoiled on the book. Afterwards they wrangle with Rey theories and the possible timelines. Good episode but be aware they drop F-bombs in their shows.
Star Wars New Canon Book Club: Episode 10 starts with a little clown discussion before rolling into Jesse’s story of meeting John Boyega. Then they talk Rogue One covering the leaked guide, the reshoots and tone, the EW news, Forest Whitaker being Saw Gerrera, everything we know so far about each of the characters, and their thoughts on who will die. They wrap things up with a little discussion on their ideas for future Star Wars movies. Fun episode.
Starships Sabers and Scoundrels: Episode #6 covers the Saturn Awards, Star Wars Celebration Europe panels, autographs and other news. They have Kate from Blabba the Hutt to talk Rogue One, SWCE, her trip plans and her Maz Kanata outfit. Afterwards they cover Rogue One news and share their thoughts. Fun episode.
