Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
Assembly of Geeks: DC Comics Rebirth and TV Trailers Review starts with Matt Moore giving the rundown on DC’s Rebirth event, then they cover the trailers for upcoming TV shows and the slew of time travel series. Fun episode.
Awards Chatter: Ray Liotta episode is a great interview with Ray as he talks about his career, being adopted, how he eventually got into acting, his initial movie roles, improving the funny scene with Joe Pesci in Goodfellas, and his latest role on the show Shades of Blue.
Blabba the Hutt: Episode 22 starts with their quick thoughts on Bloodline, then Jamie talks with Degobabe about the filming in Ireland, Kate talks with Truck Torrence about the Star Wars emojis he created, going over his creative process and style and getting early BB-8 images. After that, Jamie talks with Star Wars actors Mike Edmunds and Jay Benedict who recount some of their Star Wars experiences. Good episode.
Blast Points: Episode 22 starts with some news as they share the leaked Rogue One character names and the new ships, then they head into Episode VIII spoilers which I had to skip past as I’m not into spoilers. Unfortunately they didn’t give much of an indicator on how far ahead I had to skip to get past their spoilers, so I guessed at it and ended up skipping anything they talked about prior to their main discussion. To help those who haven’t listened to the episode yet and want to skip the spoilers, you’ll need to jump to the 20 minute mark. Their main discussion for this episode is Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie. They talk about how they first experienced the movie, their initial thoughts on it, and their thoughts on it now. They highlight some of their favorite moments and the things that hurt it. It’s a great show and worth checking out. Jason and Gabe always have an entertaining discussion, and this one is memorable as it’s the first time I can recall Jason having a hard time liking something Star Wars.
Bombad Radio: Episode 241 is a long one and celebrates their fifth anniversary. The first half takes the time to talk with some of their hosts/contributors. Jeremiah talks with Zach Johnson about his voice acting career and doing audiobooks, which is a cool conversation which covers some of the techniques and challenges of voice work. Then Jeremiah talks with Christie Poetoehena about her singing background and how that has helped her with her voice work. Afterwards Jeremiah talks with Brad Mitzelfel about his book, writing, the challenges of getting published, and his influences. Wrapping up the first half of the show is Kae Hartman who talks a little about acting, her fandoms and building armor for cosplay. For the second part of the show, Jeremiah is joined by James as they talk a while about Bombad Radio and the last five years. At the 1 hour and 25 minute mark, they dive into their interview with author John Jackson Miller as they focus on comics. John talks about the origin of Comichron, the history comic distributors, the movie and television effect on comic sales and a little on Free Comic Book Day. Great conversation, and overall, a good episode.
Brews and Blasters: Episode 72 is the return of Chris as they share their attempt to get Star Wars Celebration VIP tickets, make Celebration plans, and come up with a new shirt idea as they talk about the 2 headed announcer guy from TPM. They talk a little Dune, Blabba the Hutt heading to the podcast stage at Celebration Europe, the Rogue One info leak, the Chewbacca mom, and need’em got’em covering Maz Kanata, Disney Elite Prototype Boba Fett, R2 and some listener emails. Another fun packed episode.
Comic Book Noob: Apocalypse ties in nices to the new X-Men movie as they talk about he central villain and his role in the comics. From all his powers and abilities to his origins and their recommended reads, it’s a great episode covering the character.
Databank Brawl (ForceCenter): Episode 9 pits Logray against the First Order Flametrooper for a showdown on Endor. This one gets pretty fun as they build up backstories for each character, Logray being in possession of Vader’s melted helmet, a disgruntled Fametrooper trying to prove himself, and Kylo Ren handing out pictures ‘Have you seen this helmet?’ Fun stuff.
Fly Casual: Episode 91 includes reviews of Darth Vader #20 and Bloodline. They talk about Hosnian Prime and whether it’s important yet, Leia’s secret, and some of the details of the book. I have to admit it’s a little odd listening to the discussion when only two of the five hosts have read the book, but it does add the outsider perspective. Afterwards they take another look at the Kylo Ren/Rey relationship and whether the book alters the possibilities. Garrick gives the book a lot of praise comparing Claudia Gray to Stackpole and Zahn. Then they head into rumors with returning Star Wars Rebels characters, Tom Hardy playing a stormtrooper in Episode VIII, Rogue One names, Deathtroopers – which gets them going off on funny trooper names, and the little Ewok guy revealed in the Rogue One artwork. The spoilers aren’t too bad if you’re worried about them. Good episode.
ForceCenter: Episode 14 touches on the documentary Elstree 1976, John Boyega’s romance comments, the Disney Infinity cancellation, and Battlefront II which leads them into their main discussion of Star Wars video games. They talk about their favorites and what they would like to see in an upcoming game. They wrap things up with listener emails. Good episode.
ForceCenter: Episode 15 features guest Mike Black as they talk Star Wars action figures. From Hasbro’s handling of TFA to the other toys out there, it’s a fun discussion. Plus there’s a little bit on the Emperor.
Full of Sith: Episode CLXIX begins with some discussion on Lawrence Kasdan as Bryan talks about Kasdan’s writing in various movies. Then they play the audio for the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival ICON Award Ceremony where Kasdan talked about getting the gig for Raiders of the Lost Ark, transitioning to The Empire Strike Back, working with George, a little about The Force Awakens and the Han Solo movie. It’s a nice bit of audio and worth listening to in itself. The episode wraps up with another bit of audio, this time an interview Bryan did with actor Jason Mewes as they talk a little about movies and Star Wars. Good episode.
Hangin’ With Team Kanan: Episode 14 looks back at Star Wars Rebels covering the surprises, their first time seeing it, criticism, and they branch off and talk about the LEGO Freemaker Adventures.
Lattes With Leia: Episode #5 features guest Sarah Kuhn as they talk romance in Star Wars. They cover their favorite couples, who they ship – which leads to some fun discussions of Vader/Ahsoka and Obi-Wan/Padme. Fun episode covering some crazy and imaginative territory.
Radio 1138: Episode 44 is another episode packed with interviews. Mark talks with Phil Tippett and Michael Levine, they talk with Dee Tails and Hassani Shapi, and they talk with Simon Graham about the Biker Scout Helmet Project.
Rebel Force Radio: Episode 5.27.2016 features guest Chris Macht as he talks about his new Star Wars reality show and some general Star Wars talk. Then they play some audio of Lawrence Kasdan and share their thoughts on the Han Solo movie, go over Ewan’s latest comments, and end with the Lucas museum. Fun episode.
Rock Out Led (Rock Out Loud): Volume 2 starts with a little AC/DC Axl Rose discussion, they talk about Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes, and then head into Side B of Led Zeppelin I. Steve and Jimmy Mac get dive into the history and background of the music as well as their opinions on each song complete with audio clips.
Star Wars Action News: Episode 477 features guest Jake Stevens (From 4-LOM to Zuckuss) as they talk Star Wars Celebration Orlando, Black Series Wave Three, review the Takodana Encounter set, share their thoughts on 5 points of articulation, and rundown the news.
Star Wars Geek Girl: The Sabines Get A Review episode is kind of funny because I’m the review. It’s always a bit surreal to listen to a podcast where they talk about you. Anyways, the episode kicks off with them talking about my review, then they go over some of the events they recently did which leads to some serious and touching territory. Then they talk about Peter Mayhew’s birthday and meeting him, they share some of the Rogue One character names that were leaked, they talk about the official image of Ciena Ree, and they go over their devious scheme to spread the word of Kibbles the Loth cat. Afterwards they cover the Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode “Bombad Jedi” as they talk about Jar Jar’s creepy look, tie and black nails, the caterpillar creature, and Padme. Then they head into the Kanan comics and why Depa Bilaba is the best Jedi. The round things out with a glimpse of the Smuggler’s Bounty Box. Fun show.
Star Wars New Canon Book Club: Episode 8 covers season one of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. They share some love for “Rookies”, cover the good and the bad, the treatment of droids, loose ends, Dooku and his sails which was pretty funny, Hondo, Grievous, pacifism, the Gungan tick farmer, the Ryloth Trilogy and the Free Ryloth movement, Cad Bane the diehard and why he’s better than Grievous, and afterwards they talk a little about Bloodline. Great episode with lots of humor and fun discussion.
Talking Apes TV: Interview Special with Ken Mills and Adam O’Brien begins with a conversation with the creator of Zilch!: A Monkees Podcast, Ken Mills as they talk about Planet of the Apes and the Monkees. Then they talk with Adam O’Brien from Jogcast. It’s a double dose of Planet of the Apes conversations with two fun guests.
Western Reaches: Episode #6 is a shorter episode covering video games, getting stuck in Undertale, and various news items. Fun episode, though.
