Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
Coffee With Kenobi: Trailer Reactions episode features just Corey and Dan as they zero in on the trailer and their thoughts. Nice analysis and interesting observations.
DEAD Talks: Episode #39 covers the first episode of season six of The Walking Dead. They talk about the use of black and white for the flashback scenes, the length being an hour and a half, the redemption of Nicholas versus Father Gabriel, the idea of leading off the walker horde, and they speculate on the horn that ends the episode. There’s a good dose of criticism in this episode as they pull no punches. Plus there’s some quick comments on Fear the Walking Dead. My only complaint about this episode is that Antoinette’s mic was a little loud.
DEAD Talks: Episode #40 dives into the awesomeness that is Carol, the annoying pacifism that is Morgan (aka Tyrese 2.0), and the craziness of the Wolves. Are they a cult? What’s their mo? However the highlight of this episode has to be the point where Justin compares the Wolves to Ewoks. I literally laughed out loud at that one. From the cigarette kill to the possibility of Enid being a Wolf, or the plain craziness of a zombie truck driver, they cover a lot and keep it entertaining. Great show.
DEAD Talks: Episode #41 tackles the big question to you know who and also draws comparisons to the comics, so if you’re trying to stay absolutely spoiler free, you might want to hold off on this one. While they don’t spell it out, they drop some big hints. They also talk about what the heck Daryl was doing in this episode, the odd flow, Rick’s hand, stupid character decisions, the lack of mercy killings (which was something that really stood out to me when watching the episode), and how will Rick survive? Highlight of this episode – Predator quotes. Love that movie. Definitely check these episodes out if you’re a TWD fan. It’s a great way to dive deeper into the show.
EndorCast: The Siege of Lothal episode covers the Star Wars Rebels season two mini-movie with special guest Dupree Jones who was used to help animate Vader in the episode. Dupree talks about the mocap process and how that opportunity came about. They share their thoughts on the episode, the use of Vader, and they bring up and interesting question about Kallus: might he be related to someone important since we only have one name for him? Good episode. Worth a listen for some different insight on the show.
Fly Casual: Episode 62 dives head on into The Force Awakens trailer scene-by-scene. Yes, everyone is doing it, and there’s a lot of shared observations between the different podcasts, yet Fly Casual’s take was interesting and entertaining enough that I wasn’t burnt out on it. It’s worth adding to your playlist. They also have their usual “Porkins Bite of the Week”, plus some news and toy news in this one.
Rebels Declassified: “Relics of the Old Republic” features Josh and Stuart from TechnoRetro Dads as they discuss the Clones, the crew of the Ghost, Ahsoka and more in this episode of Star Wars Rebels. Good episode.
RebelForce Radio: Episode 10.20.2015 is their trailer discussion episode as Jason, Jimmy, Paul and F.J. DeSanto break it down and discuss it scene-by-scene. From the Knights of Ren to to the pirate castle, they cover it all. Jimmy rants about the piano notes, they talk with a Chicago radio station, and they have a hand off midway through as Jason and F.J. drop off and Kyle Newman and Sam Witwer jump in. I have to admit, this isn’t one of my favorite TFA trailer discussions. I still think Full of Sith did it best with their Trailer Council, and Rebel Yell definitely had a lot of fun with theirs (see below).
Rebel Yell: The Lost Commanders/Trailer Reaction show is a doozy. Steve, Teresa, Erich, Riley and Bethany start off with a full review of Star Wars Rebels “The Lost Commanders.” Meanwhile, they’re trying to get tickets for The Force Awakens as they’re recording that Monday night when tickets went on sale. They wrap up their review of the Star Wars Rebels episode right as half-time hits which means they all switch gears to watch the trailer live while recording. It’s extra funny cause Bethany leaves at one point to go do the Full of Sith trailer council episode, then comes back to watch the trailer, then leaves again, which puts Steve in a stir as he hasn’t been on Full of Sith yet. As they review the trailer, it’s easy to get emotional and pumped up just listening to their reactions. Lot of fun. Definitely give this one a listen.
Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode 98 is their Halloween episode as they talk with Donald Wicks (EndorCast) about Rancho Obi-Wan’s Galaween event. Afterwards they talk with Alan Stewart about the Hall Of Heroes Superhero Museum in Elkhart, Indiana which was really cool. I’ve never heard of the museum but Alan made it seem really neat. He talks about all the cool stuff they have at the museum including movie props and 60,000+ comics. He talks about how the museum came about, his work with celebrities, conventions and preserving comics, and some funny costume stories. Be sure to give this one a listen.
Star Wars Action News: Episode 460 covers movie tickets, a review of the Toys R Us exclusive Black Series 6-inch First Order Snowtrooper, and special guest Matt Booker from Jedi News as they talk about New York Comic Con. They also have an interview with the Hasbro team to talk about some of the issues and challenges they faced with Force Friday and the first wave of The Force Awakens figures. Plus Brock has a great review of the new book collection Rise of the Empire and the new short stories collected within.
Star Wars Report: Episode #190 features Riley, Mark and Erich as they talk about trailers, tickets, Star Wars Rebels “The Lost Commanders” and The Force Awakens poster. Note this episode is pre-trailer release. Erich is always a great guest, and this episode covers a lot of ground, making it a fun one.
