The Essential Characters Guide “Paused”

Going through YouTube, I was searching for Star Wars Reads Day coverage and came across a nice video of the Star Wars Reads Day event in Roseville, MN. The event included Star Wars authors Troy Denning and Daniel Wallace. RFBikerScout was nice enough to capture the video and post it for fans to enjoy. Of course the authors talked about their history in Star Wars, their books and lots of other fun topics, but right at the end of the video, Dan said something that caught me off guard. He said that the new Essential Guide to characters book has been paused.

“I was in the middle of–cause it was announced–writing the new Essential Guide to Characters…has kind of…you know, paused, I guess right now because of the movies.” -Daniel Wallace, at 28:16

Now The Essential Characters was slated for an April 15, 2014 release prior to the Disney purchase of Star Wars and the announcement of the sequel movies. Last month that release date was changed in the edelweiss catalog to March 1, 2016, a massive pushback. Without hearing anything from the publishers, it was hard to know whether that date could be trusted. However, hearing Dan say that the book has been paused certainly clears up the matter. While it makes perfect sense to delay the project in order to add all the new characters from Episode VII and possibly even Star Wars Rebels, it’s still sad to see another book being put on hold. Hopefully we’ll get some more positive news soon, especially with hints that there are more Star Wars books yet to be announced for 2014.

Until then, you can check out the video below by RFBikerScout and his coverage of the Troy Denning and Daniel Wallace Star Wars Reads Day event.

ForceCast: Episode 273 is a Star Wars Reads Day special which includes interviews with Pablo Hidalgo, Leland Chee, Timothy Zahn and Aaron Allston. Unfortunately they make listeners wait through the news and rumor discussions, but you skip all that by jumping to the 46 minute mark. Pablo and Leland talk about a lot of cool things, Tim talks about his idea for a maestro trilogy spanning three different time periods and all of his characters, while Aaron mentions that he did pitch another X-Wing book though everything is of course on hold.

Full of Sith: Episode XXXVIII has Bobbie Roberts and Dunc as special guests as they join Bryan for a discussion of Star Wars Rebels and the news that came out of New York Comic Con before diving into a Star Wars Episode VII discussion touching on rumors and possibilities. StarWars.com has a new interview with Dave Filoni talking about Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 5.

“George really got on a bend of having an episode about the droids, an episode about the Jedi, an episode about politics. And when I say episode, I mean arc. And he kind of liked to hit those different themes every season. Because of the number of stories we tell — we actually do 26 a season, we write more than we actually air — that’s why some ideas, you don’t see. You didn’t have a very big a clone-centric arc this season, but it’s one of the next storylines that’s up [in our bonus episodes]. We didn’t get really into Mother Talzin or Ventress much this season. The role Ventress played was a very important one in the end, but before, we had had two seasons in a row where we had mega Nightsister action happening. So you know, a lot of those threads in the end come together.” -Dave Filoni

Movie Review: ‘Machete Kills’

While the world raves about Gravity, another movie quietly sits in the background waiting for attention: Machete Kills. In this unabashed, over-the-top B movie, director Robert Rodriguez once again unleashed Danny Trejo as the unstoppable Machete. As a fan of the first film, I was really looking forward to seeing the sequel, and while it fell short, it was still a lot of fun. Most surprising of all was the Star Wars nods.
