With Lionsgate and Gary Ross releasing a joint email, the speculation is now over; Gary Ross will not be directing the sequel to the successful Hunger Games movie.  Following is the joint statement:

Gary Ross:

Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct Catching Fire. As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule.

I loved making The Hunger Games – it was the happiest experience of my professional life. Lionsgate was supportive of me in a manner that few directors ever experience in a franchise: they empowered me to make the film I wanted to make and backed the movie in a way that requires no explanation beyond the remarkable results. And contrary to what has been reported, negotiations with Lionsgate have not been problematic. They have also been very understanding of me through this difficult decision.

I also cannot say enough about the people I worked with: Producer Nina Jacobson, a great collaborator and a true friend; the brilliant Suzanne Collins, who entrusted us with her most amazing and important story; the gifted and remarkable Jennifer Lawrence whose performance exceeded my wildest expectations, and the rest of the incredible cast, whom I am proud to call my friends.

To the fans I want to say thank you for your support your faith, your enthusiasm and your trust. Hard as this may be to understand I am trying to keep that trust with you. Thank you all. It’s been a wonderful experience.

Lionsgate:

We’re very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct Catching Fire. We were really looking forward to making the movie with him. He did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work. This will not be the end of our relationship, as we consider Ross to be part of the Lionsgate family and look forward to working with him in the future.

A while back I started off my exploration of how comic books are made by interviewing comic book writer John Jackson Miller. John was able to shed some light on the comic writer’s perspective of the process. In my continuing investigation, I approached Michael Atiyeh to find out how things looked from the colorist’s side of things and Mr. Atiyeh was nice enough to take the time to answer my questions. Eye on the Sky: Cygnus Loop Nebula

Ultra violet image taken by NASA’s Galaxy Evolution Explorer.  The Cygnus Loop Nebula is a leftover supernova remnant of the massive explosion that occurred 5,000-8,000 years ago.  What you are seeing is gas and dust heated by the shockwave of the supernova that is still spreading outward from the explosion.  Although the nebula is 1,500 light years away, the supernova was still bright enough to be seen from Earth when it exploded.

Tom Taylor Tackles Rose and Thorn

DC Comics is launching a new anthology this July that they’re calling National Comics. The launch under the new imprint will feature stand alone issues for DC Comic characters such as Eternity, Madame X, Looker, and Rose and Thorn. In particular, Rose and Thorn will be handled by Star Wars comic writer Tom Taylor with artwork by Neil Googe, and cover by Ryan Sook. Rose and Thorn is a character with a split personality. Rose is her good side, while Thorn is her “ass-kicking femme fatale out for revenge” side. Being a big Tom Taylor fan, I’m excited to see how this one turns out.

Did you know Mark Hamill was kidnapped?

Comic book creators Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons have a new comic coming out tomorrow called The Secret Service. The plot centers around the kidnapping of famous sci-fi actors, and in issue one, this means Mark Hamill. Yes, the Mark Hamill. He not only appears in the comic, but the creators reached out to the real life Mark Hamill to get his approval. According to The Hollywood Reporter, if the comic gets made into a film they’re hoping Mark will get to play himself on the big screen.

Regardless of film aspirations, there is a eight page preview of the comic. Right off the bat, the comic dishes out a lot of playful humor in the dialog before plowing into some violence and a bunch of dark humor. The art looks pretty good and I really like the fun vibe of the story. If you’re out buying Star Wars comics tomorrow, be sure to keep an eye out for The Secret Service. The preview has a heck of an ending.
