Today Roqoo Depot wishes a happy birthday to actor Ray Park, most famously known to Star Wars fan as Darth Maul. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Ray took to martial arts at a very young age starting with Northern Shaolin Kung Fu on his father’s advice. Later in life, he went to college to be an electrician like his father, but left in his third year in order to go to World Wushu Championships in China. The decision won him two gold medals and one silver. Concentrating on his martial arts skills, he came in at fourth place at the Martial Arts World Championships in Malaysia in 1993. He also took time to teach gymnastics and martial arts classes to students in London.

He got his first step into Hollywood in 1997 as a stuntman for the film Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Afterwards he following up with his role as Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. His film credits also include X-Men (his first speaking part), Sleepy Hollow, Fanboys, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and the television series Heroes.

Yet the iconic Darth Maul stands out with his startling black and red appearance, and his flashy fighting style.

“I wanted to do fancy sword stuff like I had been doing for years. The way it worked out was I playing the Sith character all through the week, and they’d have me do the motions, like kendo, samurai style of swordplay. Then by accident, I did this block by spinning around then followed with a spinning strike. (Nick Gillard) said, ‘What did you do?’ I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m sorry, I’m sorry,’ and he said, ‘No, I like it, do what you are comfortable with.’ So then I began doing all this one handed stuff and started putting in butterfly twists and worked from there. ” -Ray Park on trying out for Darth Maul.

Feel free to stop by on Ray’s Twitter page and wish him a happy birthday. If you’d like to learn more about Ray Park, you can visit his official website here.
