First Step Toward Tractor Beam

March 1, 2011 at 11:31 am | Posted in Science News | Leave a comment

Technology Review did an article on a recent discovery that has enabled scientist to theoretically use a tractor beam on a nano scale. The new discovery should be able to work on by using a stream of photons which can negate forward momentum. For now, the concept won’t be able to stop any appreciable object, but its uses could be applied to optical technologies (holograms perhaps?). Still, with an hypothetical footstep, we are getting closer to fanciful sci-fi technology. You can read the article here and find out all the geeky details.
