We’re talking real life here.  Disguised as Vader and his stormtroopers, activists raided a suspected drug dealer’s shop in Odessa, Ukraine.  And someone got it on video.

Suvudu Fifty Page Friday: Annihilation

If you’re wondering whether or not to pick up Drew Karpyshyn’s Annihilation, Suvudu is offering a fifty page preview to convince you.  Here’s what author Karpyshyn has to say about his character, Theron Shan:

Theron was a really fun character to write; he’s not as grim or serious as Bane or Revan. He knows the stakes are high, but he’s got an irreverant vibe about him that sets him apart from some of my other characters. As much as I loved writing about all-powerful Sith and Jedi, I honestly think this book is my best Star Wars work to date because the character has to work so much harder to succeed.

And, yes, Theron is the descendent of famous Jedi-turned-Sith-turned-Jedi Revan.  You can find the preview here on Suvudu’s site.

Suvudu Fifty Page Friday: Mercy Kill

As a pre-release treat, Suvudu has dedicated this Fifty Page Friday to Aaron Allston’s Mercy Kill.  After a 13 year absence from the X-wing series, Aaron had this to say about adding an addition to the popular X-wing series.

“Imagine attending your first family reunion in 13 years — or maybe it’s 37 years, you’re bad with numbers. You’re very anxious to attend, but the prospect of getting to reacquaint yourself with long-lost relatives, to get to know their kids, to catch up on their lives, just to remember all their names, is daunting.

That’s sort of what it was like to write the opening chapters of X-Wing: Mercy Kill. Most of the novel is set 37 years after the last time Wraith Squadron was the genuine center of action of a book, making me the person in charge of introductions at that long-awaited family reunion.

I chose to kick things off with a caper set only six years after the events of X-Wing: Solo Command — at nearly the same time X-Wing: Starfighters of Adumar was taking place, in fact. The first chapter would serve to reacquaint longtime readers with and to introduce new readers to the original Wraiths, plus demonstrate their methods. Then I could jump forward to the “modern,” post-Fate of the Jedi era to bring original and new Wraiths together, to showcase the new members of the unit, and to reveal the new challenges they face. Continuity, discontinuity, family, conflict, all at once.

Writing it was difficult, challenging, and fun.

Did everyone remember to bring a covered dish to pass? Good. Here we go…”

Now the connection between the Battle of Midway and Star Wars may seem non-existent, but died-in-the-wool Star Wars fans know that George Lucas patterned his Star Wars dogfights on actual WWII aerial combat footage.  So, to mark the 70th Anniversary of Midway, Essential Guide to Warfare co-author, Paul Urquhart teamed up with artist Frank-Joseph Frelier to bring us a fun piece about the GFFA’s best pilots.  Here’s a short excerpt from  the article:

Kyp Durron stands for the Jedi opposition. Distrusted by both Luke Skywalker and the Defense Force high command, and leading a force of privateers and volunteers, his lightsaber and his stylishly dark Jedi Master robes are the nearest thing he has to an official warrant to go around blowing up bad guys.

You can read the entire piece and view all the artwork over on Suvudu.
