Author Drew Karpyshyn posted a great update on his blog covering his writing process, specifically for his upcoming book Children of Fire, which you can read below.

Step One – Start with an Idea
People often ask me where I get my ideas. I’m sorry, but that’s a question I can’t answer. I already have ideas. I have lots and lots of ideas. They just pop into my head at random times, sometimes inspired by something I read, see or hear; other times they seem to come from some mystical creative ether. When I get an idea, I add it to my idea file. That file is overflowing (digitally) with ideas – I’ll die long before I use them all up. And I’m constantly getting new ideas for the file. SciFi News did an interview with Star Wars author Drew Karpyshyn. The interview covers Drew’s work in both the gaming and publishing industry, touching on some broad topics here and there.

You were successful at Stars Wars material both in gaming and in books. Did at first you feel like you were one of the chosen few who was lucky enough to enter the huge empire that makes up Star Wars? Also did you ever get the chance to meet George Lucas?

Drew Karpyshyn: Working with the Star Wars franchise is an honor, and I realized right from the start how lucky I was to be given the opportunity. There are a lot of folks out there who want to write for Star Wars, so you need some pretty strong credentials to get in. Luckily for me, my work on the KOTOR video game and my early Forgotten Realms novels was enough to convince the powers-that-be to give me a shot. But even though I’ve now written five Star Wars novels, I still haven’t had the chance to meet George Lucas himself.

Kicking off with a little book news, upcoming Star Wars author Martha Wells revealed that she has almost finished work on her Leia novel which will be part of the Rebels series.

I’ve managed to stick to my writing goal, which is really good, as the Star Wars book is due by January 31. I should hopefully be done with the first draft in the next ten days or so, then be able to get a bunch of revision done before I send it in.

Meanwhile comic cover artist Stéphane Roux has teased another image of a possible new Star Wars series. This is in addition to last week’s image. Continue Reading Around the Web…
