Toyfair 2013 unveiled some cool new Star Wars toy news, including some more details and images of Hasbro’s new Star Wars: The Black Series line.

According to Rebelscum.com, Hasbro is planning on doing 75% Original Trilogy characters and 25% Prequel Trilogy characters with a focus on fan favorites and best of. There are no plans yet for TCW, EU, creatures, or vehicles but Hasbro is open to the possibility depending on sales. The figures will have a mix of both “soft goods” and plastic parts.

AFT has an awesome gallery you can check out here. They’ve got pictures of the first wave (Luke, R2, Darth Maul, and Sandtrooper). Rebelscum has pictures on their site as well, along with other figures featured at Toyfair.

Pixel-Dan.com did a nice video of the figures on display with some commentary. The Black Series will be out in August.

The old vintage Star Wars action figures, while not always the most accurate depictions of their film counterparts, have a certain visual appeal. Part of it is nostalgic, but part of it is stylistic. The old figures had a look the mirrored the time period they were from.

Now if someone told me they were going to do an art portrait series on the vintage Star Wars figures, I wouldn’t have thought much of it. But sometimes seeing is believing.

Below are a series of oil paintings by Swedish artist Mats Gunnarsson. Mats captures the look of the old toys many of us grew up with as well as a tiny piece of the nostalgia of our childhoods. We also managed to snag a moment of Mats’ time and asked him a few questions. We hope you enjoy our gallery of Mats Star Wars artwork and his interview below.

Customizing Ewoks

September 21, 2012 at 8:38 am | Posted in Toys | Leave a comment

There are some dark paths so addictive, they become all consuming. Yet action figure customization is one of those dangerous journeys that has always tempted me. Who hasn’t looked at an action figure with an awful paint job and wondered if they could do better? With my artistic inclination, I always thought about it, but was afraid to do so and ruin one of my prized toys.

Until now.

Staring at my small Star Wars Ewok collection, I wondered what Logray would look like with black stripes. I had the paint, a paint brush, and even an extra Logray I could afford to ruin. In about ten minutes his brown stripes turned black and I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

Logray was now Wartuk. Continue Reading Customizing Ewoks…

Toy Review: Xodiac by Four Horsemen

June 28, 2012 at 8:16 am | Posted in Reviews, Sci-Fi, Toys | Leave a comment

Back in 1968, Mel Birnkrant designed a line of alien toys for the Colorforms Company called The Outer Space Men. The wire framed, soft vinyl figures were bendable and had the same style as the Major Matt Mason toyline made by Mattel which were introduced in 1966. Unlike the Major Matt Mason figures, The Outer Space Men focused entirely on aliens.

Sadly the toys are hard to come by nowadays, and if you do come across one its generally missing it’s accessories. To see one still in the package is an extremely rare find. Thankfully Four Horsemen Studios acquired the rights to start making the toys again, and with Mel Birnkrant’s help, they’ve developed a new line of Outer Space Men figures. The new toys look very similar to the originals, but with a few differences. First off, they’re smaller. Secondly they are no longer bendable with wire frame skeletons and soft vinyl bodies. Instead they now have articulated joints and hard plastic bodies. It’s a bit of a trade off, but to have the accessories and the vintage looking packaging, it’s worth it.
