So long, Steve

I want to be upfront and say that I’m not entirely sure where this post is going.

I had a very contentious relationship with Steve Jobs. Not that I knew the man, mind you. There was simply no escaping his vision and his philosophies. Much of his business mantra flew in the face of very deep-held technological beliefs. Closed, highly controlled environments over open and customizable. I’m writing this piece on a Lenovo Thinkpad, the Mirror Universe Macbook. I’ve been known to go on rants to my tech friends about how Apple’s closed environment stifles the user experience and goes against everything I stand for as a gadget geek. Given the choice, I’d take a Windows or a Linux machine where I can tweak to my heart’s content.

And, yet, despite the deep philosophical differences I have with the way Apple and Steve Jobs, I knew that the tech world wasn’t going to be the same without him.

StarWars.com interviewed Ryder Windham and Pete Vilmur, the authors of Star Wars: The Complete Vader. The interview also includes a link to a 7 page preview of some of the gorgeous artwork and pictures included in the book. The interview covers where the idea came from and how it got started, their favorite images and memorabilia, and more. You can read the full interview here.

This is just a taste of some of the wonderful, full page artwork included throughout the book.

The Complete Vader comes out October 18. It’s a massive hardcover and although it’s listed at just 192 pages, the book is bigger than most World War II encyclopedias with lots of colorful images and art, plus interactive flaps and fold outs. The book itself chronicles everything Vader: the films, the merchandise, promotional events, and more. It gives a thoroughly enjoyable look at the history of the Dark Lord and everyone whose played a part in his mythos. This is one Star Wars history book that’s worth getting or a must have for your holiday wishlist. We’ll have our own review up shortly, so stay tuned.

Interview with Carrie Fisher on Wishful Drinking

Chris Jones from the Chicago Tribune conducted an interview with Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher the other day. The interview focuses on Carrie’s book and play “Wishful Drinking” which is available on DVD (via HBO).

Q: Among Hollywood celebrities with famously complex childhoods, you are an uncommonly good writer.

A: I fell in love with words early on. Books were my first drugs, they were a perfect escape. They’re structured, organized and they have happy endings. There is an internal life, whereas showbiz is so external. The books I liked most were novels. They make you an observer. I always was an observer.

The interview is actually kind of harsh with some cold sounding questions, however Carrie adamantly answers every one of them and some of the answers are pretty insightful. You can read the full interview here.
